Hi I am new here. My husband bought me this gorgeous ring. I have always wanted a larger OMC for years. Anyhow this ring is listed as a J VS1 2 caret. The stone is very clear, however I find the color to be more yellow/brown then what I am used to, it is also set next to diamonds that are very white which I think makes the color stand out more.

Not sure how I feel about the color, I do love it otherwise it sparkles like crazy and has tons of character. I took it into my local jeweler who stated that he thought the color was more of K-L-M and needs to have part of the ring constructed as it was done poorly. He quoted another $600-$1000 on top of what we paid. He also seemed to think the price was steep for what we paid. However a quick search for 2 caret OMC VS K/L is significantly more then we paid ($8650). By the time we repair it, it would put it at $9,600. Do you think that price is fair for this ring? or should I return it? I don't think I am going to find a 2 caret clear stone that is lighter in color for under 10K which is more then we wanted to pay.

Hi, it sounds like this center stone is uncerted? Is the center stone two carats or is that the carat weight of the whole ring?

It’s possible that the center stone is M/N color.

There some pretty KLM stones available in your budget. Are you open to Old Europeans Cuts?

Thank you for your response. It is not certified and the center stone is 2 carets with .5 in side diamonds. Gram weight 3.6. I love OEC as well, but really prefer and OMC. I could find no 2 caret stones that were K and VS that were in my budget. I must be looking in the wrong places!

Wow that is an oooooold diamond. Can you post more pictures? I can’t quite see the faceting. If I’m right about what I’m seeing then the diamond is much older than the setting. A very old stone like that is so rare and special, I don’t think it makes sense to look for “comps” per se. if you live antiquity I think the price is in line with retail for a diamond that size.

It looks like a Mazarin cut or a Peruzzi? @LightBright ?

Dreamer are you sure it’s not newly cut and retro fitted into an old setting? The stone has a large table.

It’s possible. It looks antique to me though. And they were cutting all kinds of random stuff way back then. We need more information!

This! And also what does the girdle look like? Is it very fat and frosty looking or thin like a knife or is it faceted? Do you have a loupe?

The seller stated the diamond is from the 1840's to 1870's. The setting is from the1920's. They did a terrible job resetting it which is why a lot of it needs to be rebuilt. I will post more pictures. better side view.jpgside view 2.jpgbest side view crappy sauter.jpgbest side view2.jpgbest side view 3.jpganother view.jpg

It is in a new setting. 1920's, but the seller states the stone is from the 1820's-1870's not sure how you verify that.

No loop!

I took it to a second jewelry store today to see about fixing it as the cost at $1,000 seemed high. Anyhow he said he would return it that it was crap and he could get me a much better diamond for the price..He said he would also not work on the setting at all or the ring as he did not trust where it came from. Maybe worried about damage if he removed the stone? I insisted that I wanted an OMC and not a new stone, but a vintage one 2 caret and VS. Not sure I should listen to him, but he comes highly recommended and seemed confident on sourcing an OMC to my liking within my budget. I am torn, it is a tad too warm for my taste... But I do love its chunky chunkiness. Ha. I have searched high and low online and I do not see where you can get an OMC of that size with those specs for $8,600. I am worried I am letting a good deal go by sending it back...

I would return. The diamond is super warm and if it bothers you now, it will always. What do you risk by returning it? There does not seem to be a ton of shoppers looking for natural diamonds these days. I am willing to bet that if you return this diamond and check out your other options, this stone will still be available. Don’t settle. That stone is not a j or k or l or m. Keep going down the alphabet. 10k is way too much. You should check out IG sellers like gildedlane—she has great options!

I think it’s a true antique, and as I said, I think it’s older than the range you are being given. The setting is garbage and I would not both fixing it. If you keep it get a new setting.

Would you consider buying on eBay? Many good old cuts there, most with GIA lab reports now.

Also consider IG sellers. Gilded Lane. XOthebijouxbox. Maven.Lane.Antiques. There’s others. All of them offer excellent options at good prices. There are lots of us on here who are good at hunting. Tell us budget and we can list options.

If you don’t live this one I say return it. While it is cool and old the cut is weird and I bet it’s not as sparkly as it could be. Unless you love the wonk and uniqueness, keep looking.

Thank you. You are right, it would likely bother me forever (warmness). I appreciate the frankness.

Thank you so much for the ideas and honesty. I do not mine the old weird cut, I mind the warmth and I feel like it faces up much smaller then I would prefer. This ring did come off of Ebay. I have looked at a bunch of stones on Ebay and I did not find any that were a VS and 2 caret and a better color grade which is important to me, for under 10K at least. I will keep looking and check out the suggestions above. I have not checked out Instagram, I will do that. My budget is $8500, because then I would need a setting on top of that. 10K max including the setting, maybe that is dreaming which is why I thought this was a screaming deal.

You should post in Eockt Talky to get more attention, or another thread here, asking for help with the search. And check the “somebody’s got a buy this piece” thread bc people post delays there all the time.

Why VS clarity? If it’s eye clean and has a lab report, SI1 or even SI2 opens many options.

I would return. I’m of the camp, if you don’t love it immediately- return. Life is too short to keep things that don’t bring you joy.

Old mine cut, $10k budget, color sensitive.

Auction & IG will be your friend, and patience. In the meantime- learn, look at lots of diamonds, look at the specs on the ones you love, so you can find out why you love them, and you can begin to narrow your search.

My biggest piece of advice with antique stones is try to see the faceting first. Old cuts are incredibly special because they were cut by hand. They are wonky. Because of this coupled with the fact that they are old, like 150yrs old… fall in love with their imperfection's, beauty marks…. It’s what sets them apart from perfect modern cut stones. If you only look at VS stones you are missing out on some gorgeous budget friendly stones.

Here’s a couple examples.
This first one is my favorite 2ct stone I’ve come across in the past couple months

This one is very pretty too

I would also return bc you don’t seem to love it and you seem like you are trying to convince Yourself into liking it. As others have said, it’s very warm. I would say ST. I also have red flags with that second jeweler. Let PS shop for you!

Also I really don’t like the way it’s cut personally- even if it’s old. That big table would bother me.

Just to add one more note. The stone is not even certified so who knows if it’s even a VS. You might be less sensitive to clarity than you think and I think that maybe if you would be cool with an SI one or two where the inclusions are not noticeable, you can get more bang for your buck.

I hate to say it, but I agree, this is not a well cut stone and you can find something way better in that price range with some work and patience. The table is too big, the symmetry is way off and if you get a better cut stone you'll get way more sparkle. Most of the photos you shared show big areas of the stone where the light is getting trapped and the stone is dark.

What are the face up dimensions of the center stone in millimeters?
