Hi, which of these OMCs have the best cut? I am looking for a stone for my e-ring. I don't care for color or clarity, but I would like to have a stone that sparkles.

Honestly, I wanted a 5 stone ring from Whiteflash as my e-ring. However, partner doesn't want new diamonds (he doesn't think they are conflict free enough); I don't want lab diamonds. So we are limited to old cuts or buying 2nd hand.

A few things to unpack here - is there a reason you like OMCs over another antique cut, such as a transitional or old European cut? That will be closer to the look of a modern round brilliant diamond than a wonky OMC.

Also - why not a 5-stone over a solitaire?

The conflict free thing…I dunno, I’ve never understood the claim that antique diamonds are conflict free or more ethical. I don’t think there is any way to guarantee that an antique diamond was ethically mined, because supply chain improvements and labor laws weren’t even in existence when many of these older diamonds were mined. I understand that they proceed the blood diamond era, but I doubt labor conditions were great in diamond mines circa 1800.

Anyways, I don’t think you should settle for something you don’t care for if you’re wearing it everyday

Agree with some of @Cerulean 's points.

I just want you to be aware that a few of these are going to face up pretty small for their carat weight.
You might want to use the diamdb tool to see how large the stones will face up on your finger size so you're not in for a surprise.

This is my favorite stone of the ones you posted.

Hi Cerulean,
Thank you for your reply. My eyes tend to be drawn to the OMCs when I browse through pricescope. Do the old european cut or the transitional cuts sparkle more than old mine cuts?

5 stone- I think I am holding out hope that I can find one or something similar preloved and didn't want to end up with 2 similar rings in the future.

Conflict free- I gave him your example and he said there is a difference between conflict and poor labor practices. I asked for clarification. He said while it is not ideal, it is not conflict. He said he will research more through watchdog groups. I still do not understand.

I am looking for alternatives that can satisfy both of our criteria.

@Butternut, do you have a budget you're working within, in case any of us can share suggestions with you?

Have you seen OMCs in person? It’s not that they sparkle more or less than OECs and transitionals, but have a different overall look. They tend be a little less symmetrical and some of them have a dark “cross” in the middle, and most OMCs are less flashy and bright than OECs (with poorer light return)… and a transitional is going to be the closest to more modern diamonds.

There are also earlier brilliant cuts cut in the mid century but they tend to have poor light return and I haven’t seen many that I’d consider well cut. I was just curious since you said like the MRBs I just figured an OMC was a farther departure aesthetically. But I love OMCs (and have one myself) so totally get why you are drawn to them!

As for the ethical question, not here to deter one way or the other and totally understand if it’s important. It’s just something I’ve pondered, and have not gone deep on literature or research around it. I just feel like casually calling antique diamonds “ethical” (not saying you are, I just see in marketing all the time for antique dealers) feels a little naive and simplistic. I doubt there is such a thing as a totally ethical mined diamond (guaranteed)

Budget is ~$4k

I have not seen OMCs in person, only in photos and videos. Same with super ideals. I just assumed that super ideals would sparkle the most.

Ethics - I agree. I think it's the idea of reusing what's already been made that makes it more ethical? But then what about the origin that we can't track? I am still confused.

OWD (Old World Diamonds) sells & makes all kind of rings using antique diamonds. Adam does custom work (so you can design the setting of your dreams, or make design alterations to suit) and can help you pick out diamonds that make your heart sing.

He does have two seven-stone rings and two six-stone rings on his site, for your perusal pleasure:

If you want maximum sparkle and wow factor, I’d honestly choose and OEC over an OMC especially in a smaller size. But that’s just my 2 cents

But antiques in general are going to have broader flashes, and “pastel” looking colors reflected, whereas an MRB is going to be more “splintery” with narrow arrows reflecting light

Adam is also really lovely to work with and works with a range of budgets. I’m biased, because I got my OMC from him :)

If you decide to reach out, I’d encourage contacting through instagram as in my experience it was the best way to communicate with him

Jewels by Grace makes a ton of oec/omc bands as well.
omc
oec

Also, just to throw it out- on Loupe Troop there is a 1.36ct true hearts solitaire ring for right around your budget, finished! It is definitely a smart economical choice that you can present to your partner.

Thank you for all the recommendations! I will look through them tonight and show them to my partner. Thank you again!

It’s sounds as if your BF hasn’t really done his homework on what constitutes “conflict free” and seems to think any new diamond is a conflict diamond. That is simply not the case so I hope both of you can do some more research. I would not want to see you settle if a five stone whiteflash is what you have your heart set on.

I would not go with anything that has a cavity or chip
