OK...

Hubby cannot see it.. but I know it is there... you can see it a little on the top.. just on the raised parts.. Don''t know how to explain.. you know.. not the smooth part. It is not very noticable.. but I know it is there. I wa picking up something too close to a brick wall and it must have hit the wall....!!!! What can I do? No one can see it.. but I Can and I know that it is there!! Help Help Any suggestions?

I am so mad at myself. I am so anal about my spess and I messed it up... Boo Hoo... help!!

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, MINE!...but even sorrier that you're so upset about it! It probably isn't nearly so bad as you think.

I have a couple of colored stone rings that have tiny "dings" in them that only an extreme anal case would see. I figure it just goes with having a colored stone that isn't a diamond.

You could have it repolished of course...I've done that...but it seems to me better to adopt an attitude that these treasures aren't "damaged", but merely show a patina of love and wear...

I know how upsetting this can be. I thought I scratched my e-ring when I first got it. I never did anything about it as noone else could see it. It did bug me though. The funny thing is, I never scratched it. It's a blue sapphire and when I got a loupe last month I louped it to find out it was just the color variation within the stone. Anyway, if it's so minor your hubby can't see it, leave it be, or if it really bugs you have it polished. But then you risk something else going wrong when they take the stone out and remount it. Tough call.

widget''s right you can get it repolished. That''s too bad, I''m sorry.

Yes, you can have it repolished...

... but it is more useful to hold that thought and not go for it every time there is some imperceptible scratch.

Jewelry gets worn only if it is beautiful and loved enough to be used

I know how upset you must be, but I think Ana and Widget are right.

Your ring is being worn. Stuff''s bound to happen. I would wait a while before I repolished the stone. Everything you wear everyday gets a patina of use.

I hope our advice gives you some comfort.

I know that I am being crazy about it. You can only see it in a certain light, angled just the right way with your eyeball almost less than an inch from it...LOL. But I know that it is there. I do not want to repolish it yet.. just cause I am afraid to take it to just anyone.. and I do not want to part from it yet either.

I know that it is not that big of a deal though... thank you everyone for your words of support. I know that I am blowing this thing up bigger than it really needs to be. I seem to be the only one that can spot it. DH had to look at it for about 20 minutes before he said.. oh yeah.. right there?

I agree with Ana and the others...when you have gemstones as e-rings and with daily use they are bound to get knicked up a bit...I would just take it as a sign that you are wearing it the way it should be worn, aka very well....maybe you can repolish it in a few years or something. Don''t obsess on it! Eat some pumpkin pie instead.

Don''t be me.

As someone who is also very anal, I feel your pain. I almost went to our local jeweler to get my e-ring polished when I noticed the first mark on the platinum. But, I too didn''t want to part with my ring for even an hour, so I just dealt with it. Now there are so many little marks it actually doesn''t bother me. It was just the first one, the one that basically said "this ring is no longer new" that bugged me. So, my advice, like the others, is to see how you feel about the scratches once you''re no longer obsessing over them. My guess is they will stop bugging you, but, if they still bother you, I''d get the stone polished.

Oh Mine, I''m sorry you scratched your beautiful ring.

I have to agree though, that if it takes someone else 20 minutes to spot then you should wait before getting it repolished. It''s kinda like that first ding you get in a new car. Nothing much you can do about it unless you never drive [or wear] the thing.

What a great example! The only thing is, if your first ding is like mine--the whole front end of our new Audi was smashed by a 16-year-old--you have no choice but to fix it.

But, I guess that's what it comes down to with our jewelry--how big and noticeable is the "ding"

Hi Mine,

Sorry to hear about your ding. I would also wait to repolish it. I have dinged my star ruby in my ring and am going to wait to repolish it. You can clearly see this ding but if you repolish it everytime you ding it you''ll end up loosing valuable weight after a couple of years.

Regards,
Maurice

I''m so sorry you dinged your gorgeous spess!

I''ve admired it for a long time! A life well-lived is bound to have some dings along the way; and a "smile line" or two adds character to a beautiful face...

MINE!!,
If the nick is slight and you want to reduce it''s ability to be seen you can often have a jeweler who''s versed in fixing stones do a quickie polish on the nick. This is done by using a hard felt or rubber wheel and filling it with 14,000 diamond paste. Give the area around the nick a quick once over and the polish will kind of round out and smooth a shallow nick so that it''s much harder to see. This is a good fix for those times when you don''t want to re-polish the stone and you do want to hide little nicks. The key word here is little. If the nick is too large this is not going to help.

Hi MINE!

Sorry to hear about your spessartite, it happens, though.

I don''t know how your ring is set, but if the table of the stone is higher than any of the prongs or other metal, it can easily be repolished without it being removed from the setting (and risking more damge). I just did this for a customer with a large blue-green tourmaline and it took only about 10 minutes plus setup time.
I''m assuming the ding is on or very near the table.
If the area with the ding/scratch cannot be laid flat on a surface withour metal interfering, the stone would probably have to be removed. Probably better to live with it, for now.

OK.. I took my ring to the jeweler first thing this morning... I showed him the ring and he said "where" I showed him.. he said "where?" So I showed him again. He started Laughing!!1 Grabbed his loupe and said "there?" And I said.. YES!! I can see it without the loupe though. he said that that there was definitely a roughening on the table and iut was so minute that that you could really only see it under a loupe. But I told him that I could see it though. He told me to go home and enjoy my beautiful ring and that there was nothing he would do that is worth doing. He said that I am just being over sensitive.. LOL... Thank goodness... But I CAN see it I CAN!!

Oh, so sorry to hear you dinged your magnificent spess.
My e-ring is a sapphire, and when I noticed its first ding I was also terribly depressed. But I love it, and I want to wear it every day, and if I do...it''s gonna get dinged up a bit. Even diamonds do. Try to just enjoy your luscious ring. The first ding is the hardest to deal with. :)
