Oh dear! My boyfriend told his parents several weeks ago that he was going to propose to me soon, and his mom told his aunts and uncles, and the news started trickling through his extended family, and I think that the message got garbled and his family thinks we're actually engaged already, so now his cousins, their spouses, etc., are congratulating us on facebook when nothing has happened yet! LOL!

It's a good thing that his proposal isn't going to come as a surprise to me anyway, bc then I would DEFINITELY know that something is up! Wow, I can't imagine how my bf would feel if he was trying to keep the proposal a surprise from me, sheesh! People really need to wait for the official "relationship status" change! hahaha

Oh family!

Did you put the fact that you''re not engaged into your news feed?

(future congratulations on your future engagement!)

*Sigh*

There should be a facebook etiquette course for people who didn''t start on it in college!!!

Echoing HD: future congratulations!

I private messaged the family members who congratulated us and explained the situation. Hopefully the news will spread through the grapevine that we''re not actually engaged yet. Luckily, the messages on our facebook walls were pretty generic - just things like "I heard the news, congrats!" If any of our friends are curious and ask, maybe we can just tell them we got raises at work or....won 20 bucks on a scratcher or something. haha

eesh.. my mom found out about facebook. That was a dark day because then she told everyone in my family to get a facebook profile. Facebook has become a total social twilight zone. Sorry about that.

Lol! Well, if you had even the smallest doubt about his intentions...you definitely don''t anymore!!

That''s funny. I had my dad ask me the other day why this daughter of a family friend (who is only like 15) who i happen to be facebook friends with (I don''t know her that well but felt rude not accepting the friend request) thought that SO and I were engaged...

Similar to you, I have NOTHING on my profile that would give the impression that he and I are engaged or married... so I have no clue where this girl got that impression...

I just laughed but I think there was definitely a split second when my dad thought I might have gotten engaged and put it on facebook before I told my family. Seriously?

Some people are so clueless, lol. At least, like you said, they didn''t ruin your surprise.

I''d be irked, to be honest, if that happened to me. What are they going to do when it really happens? Congratulate you again? lol

My niece and her hubby were announcing their second pregnancy/baby in person, to their families, parents, etc. and begged everyone to not say anything on Facebook, until they could tell the immediate families in person! Not something I would have thought about had they not stressed it first!

Early congratulations on your eventual engagement!

Ugh!! Sometimes people are so up in other people''s business when they shouldn''t be. We had the same issue, my mom told her hairdresser we were getting engaged too and news spread like wildfire. What a mess.
