Opals are without question my favorite stone and I don''t even like diamonds. What I want to know is if there is any way to coat an opal or otherwise protect it against chipping. Also, are there certian kinds that are stronger than others. I would appreciate any help.

Putting it in a bezel setting would be your best bet. They are very soft and need a lot of TLC. I''m not sure about coating them, never heard of that before. Not an expert just a lover of opals. Funny thing is there are so many rings I have seen that are antiques and those opals have held up quite well. Good luck in your quest.

Opal is opal and you take it like it is, fragility and all. There are ways of designing settings for solid opals that offer considerable protection but you''d need to discuss that with a custom jeweler.

Maybe you''d be happy with an opal triplet which can be very beautiful and relatively inexpensive. A thin layer of precious opal is backed with black chalcedony or black non-precious opal then capped with clear quartz or glass. The opal layer is protected. Well-made triplets are durable enough for men''s rings.

I adore opals as well...but I am just going to say that if you or your FI is superstitious opals would be a very bad choice for an ering. Just about every bad association in the book.

If you didn't wear it every day and babyed it you might be able to make an ering out of it.

Richard?
ETA: whoops, didn't scroll down enough to see that you had already posted! :-)

You probably wouldn''t want to hear my opinion on that. As I''ve said for many years, the only bad luck associated with precious opal is not being fortunate enough to own several fine ones. But if people truly believe that stuff they should probably find another gem. I''ve been cutting and selling opals for a very long time and they have brought me much good fortune and pleasure.

Most of the superstitions I know of are Christian and I am not, so I have become rather unfazed by such symbolism. I appreciate your concern. I am looking at a ring where the opal does not go very high out of the setting. The setting, of which I do not know the name, wraps around the opal rather than prongs. Also, all the rings I am looking at have a number of small opals rather than a large one if that makes a difference. Thank you for the input so far.
By the way rainbowtrout, your avatar is beautiful. I have 2 cats and am almost done fostering 4 kittens!

Ummm... most superstitions are pagan.. including this one.

thanks--he''s my mom''s ragdoll kitten. Getting on to a year old now, and BIG!

I AGREE MINE. Anyone who would like an Opal as an e-ring should have one.

My best friend has an opal e-ring and her and her husband have a fantastic marriage. They were made for each other.
