Opinion on a Chrysoberyl, and VVS1Gem

I have been hearing many disheartening things about the (un)availability of chrysoberyl in the 6-8mm square I am looking for - and I am starting to think about recuts.

But first, what do you guys think of this stone?

http://www.ebay.com.sg/itm/3-46ct-C...094?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43bbd020be

and this stone?

http://www.ebay.com.sg/itm/3-57Cts-...084?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item338490dbe4

And secondly, have you guys purchased from either of those ebay stores i.e. sggembkk and oilpearl?

I'm also seeing a lot of larger chrysoberyls on the VVS1Gem site here (http://stores.ebay.com.sg/vvs1gem/_i.html?_fsub=858900016) that look like they might stand up to recuts. Have you bought from this site before, and how do I arrange for recuts?

Sorry for the many questions, and thank you all lovely people very much!

I don't like this colour at all; it is a drab olive colour with the cut slightly lacking.

Looks promising but I would prefer to see a video and/or a straight on picture, not an angled one.

I have not purchased from the above two vendors but have several satisfied transactions with Tan (he has 3 or 4 eBay stores with VVS1gem being one of them). I generally do not buy with an intent to recut, but opt of one with both good colour and decent cutting. You absorb the risk of damage and loss of saturation during a recut. Few stones are good candidates for a recut.

Thanks Chrono. I've heard about the risk of damage - but I haven't gotten any word of a possible stone (even after contacting sixteen cutters) so I'm just considering my options.

I don't know what the etiquette is on PS - do I raise another thread on the forum if I want to ask something a little different? I was wondering if any of you have seen rectangular halo rings, with the longer side on the horizontal.. There are some slightly rectangular gems (6.5 x 7.5mm) I've seen that might work.

There's been pictures and threads in RT very recently on rectangular stones in a EW halo. Usually I stick to one thread if the questions are related.

I do not recommend ssgemkk...If you search carefully, you would find a lot of their pair stones are just using reflection pictures of one stone. :? Also their photos look like have serious photoshop...

sonyachancs,

Are you under a serious time crunch for completion of your engagement ring? In my experience, finding a nice chrysoberyl takes some time.

I know some people who have undertaken recuts of chrysoberyls, but in the cases I have seen, each has been to improve the cut rather than completely change the shape. I also have seen mostly ovals and cushions, and a round every once in awhile. You would have to have a very large stone with plenty of depth to recut in a different shape. Asschers are really deep so that would mean you would need a super duper deep stone.

Most of the super bright chrysoberyls do come from Tanzania, but ChrisA and myself have nice ones from Madagascar. Here is my thread:

I was looking at jewelsapphire.com for you to see if there were any candidates for a recut. These are all sri lankan stones, and none are vivid. I thought there might be a recut candidate but they all look to be too shallow.

Every so often, Tan might get a princess chrysoberyl. You can ask him if he has any more. Not sure if this is the cut you're looking for, but it's a princess cut. I own this stone.

This is all great advice coming from the owner of one of the most beautiful chrysoberyls on PS - if anyone knows their stuff, its erini! :))

I just got good news these past days - there are a few sellers with stones! I will hear from them soon - but in the meantime I am hanging tight. wish me luck!

This thread reminded me of this 5 ct. Chrysoberyl I saw a few weeks ago. I love the color and the cut looks passable as is, but it could be a candidate for a re-cut.

I saw that too! But after reading what so many PSers think about recuts - I'm really rethinking it..

TL, incidentally the princess is the only square cut I don't really want! I am hoping for something with cut corners, or curvier sides.

Thanks for the links, erin. and OMG, your stone is utterly gorgeous! I'm not under a serious time crunch, so I do have time to wait out for a nice stone. although of course I would prefer to have it sooner, rather than later!

thank you! I'm going to keep away from them. buying stones off ebay in general feels really dodgy - I'm so glad you guys notice things like that.
