I'm new to colored stones and would really appreciate feedback on the two stones I'm looking at.

First one light green 7.0x7.5x5.6mm size:1.90circumference
Second one:darker green 6.6x7.7x4.3mm 1.6mmcircumference

They're both untreated (at least that's what I'm told) and both Colombian. Does the lighter one look like it has a window? The dark one seems dull. They're both about$5.5k...does that sound right? How much would a similar stone cost per carat? Are certain cuts of emeralds more expensive like diamonds?

Beryl (and emeralds) have low refractive index so coupled with a step cut, they show tilt windows easily, which is what you see in the first stone. Is it still see-through when viewed straight on? I would want confirmation from a neutral and reputable third party that both are completely untreated. The darker one appears duller because it is too included. It would be ideal for an emerald to be as clean as stone 1 but with the colouration of stone 2.

If those are vendor photos, I'd ask for some of the 1st one on a white background. That yellowish one can influence the color you see in the emerald -- or it was white & was color-adjusted. The 2nd stone is, as Chrono says, very included & hasn't much life. Definitely ask for proof of treatment (or not) from a lab.

The first stone has more promise but unless you see a photo taken head on to the stone it's difficult to be sure.

I personally don't like the colour or inclusion level of the second one which would put it out of the running for me.

I agree with others, but wonder why the second one was taken with light coming in from behind it! I think the stone might look very different - perhaps even worse, who knows - if the light was diffused but shining down on the stone.

It looks like the first may have quite a bit of window, have to see in person to be sure.

Second one could be a terrible stone or terrible photo; can't tell anything with that picture.

Actually, now that I look again, I think the same may be true of the first stone as well. :((

It is a very pretty color but it's also VERY included. Do you have any other options?

Thank you everyone for your helpful response! The vendor sent me a video and the light stone looks a lot better there I think. Ps doesnt allow movie files so i cant upload it here. The price did seem a bit on the higher side I thought for the size and quality...would you agree? Can anyone recommend an online seller for emeralds?

I second Chrono's suggestion. If you do a search here for Embassy Emeralds, you will see some very pretty stones that were just bought recently so you can gauge whether they're something that appeals to you.

Thank you minibus bijoux and chrono! I'll check out embassy emeralds. What are some of the things to look out for when buying emeralds? Is it true a carat emerald looks bigger than a carat diamond?

Yes, this is true. Emeralds have a lower density than diamonds. So if you had a 1 carat diamond and a 1 carat emerald, both cut in the same shape, the emerald would be slightly bigger.

Good luck!

Emerald (and all other beryl like morganite and aquamarine) are larger than a diamond of the same carat weight, one of the very few with lower density.

Thank you chrono and periwinkle girl! I'll be back with more questions...everyone on ps has been so helpful.

There have been 3 or 4 recent Emerald threads with newbies to gem collecting who have wanted and bought an Emerald. It'd be a good idea for you to read those threads because there's a wealth of information in them. Most have ended up buying from Embassy Emeralds and you'll be able to see the vendor's photos and then compare them to the buyer's photos also.

Please do come back and let us know what you've decided - we love photos too. :praise:

I'm kind of late to this thread, but the second one looks to be a richer color than the first one which seems to be cleaner. The thing with emeralds is that many times, in photos, the inclusions look far worse than they are IRL. I would like to see both of them together in a photo on the hand in natural diffused light. All emeralds have inclusions, but usually the lighter ones, are often cleaner. If you find a very clean emerald that is also a medium dark very slightly bluish green, and Muzo, it will cost a fortune. One has give or take with these stones, and often you have to juggle clarity for color. The top one also appears it may have a huge window, and I would like to see that one face up as well.

The dark one may seem dull in the photo, but emeralds are the most difficult gems to photograph properly IMO. It may be beautiful IRL.

What are the carat weights?
