I have a couple of red gemstones , each approx. 0.85 ct. Can somebody suggest if they look like
rubies, or just some type of garnet ? Sorry for the bad images, I did my best :).
Thanks in advance,

From your pics, they look more like garnets. I would guess pyrope or hessonite, possibly malaias. However, I think malaias are one of the more sparkly garnets.

Thank you, would you know by any chance if they are worth anything, or they are good just to make some earrings.

I don’t think they would be worth much, but they would make lovely earrings. I love garnets. I have pink, green, orange, red, and mixed shades. I actually think my red almandine is a way prettier stone than one of my rubies.

I love garnets! They come in many different colors. Some of them are sparkly and rival the prettiest stones of all. Yet they tend to be relatively inexpensive. Enjoy your good fortune!

Thank you! They are very beautiful indeed.

Red garnets usually look brown under CFL. It is quite sparkling if cut probably.

Can I ask about other "garnets" that I got. The problem is that they are very small and in the ring.
There are 3 red stones and a seller thinks that central red stone is a ruby and 2 others are garnets.
The problem is that diamond tester shows the same conductivity for all 3 - closer to ruby, which means that none of 3 are garnets because garnets have much lower conductivity.
I am wondering if it is possible to guess what those stones are from the pictures attached, sorry for the bad quality, the stones are very small - a little more than 3 mm in diameter. I am concerned only about red stones, since I was looking for red garnets.
Thanks in advance,

For your ring nearly impossible to say. the green stone could be a peridot or also a (hydro)grossular from color. The reds, can be corundum (saphire or ruby) but there are many other possibilities like spinel, garnet, tourmaline.... same with the other colors blue could be saphire, spinel, tanzanite and for the colorless something like topaz, spinel, saphire.. And these were just the "natural" stone possibilities.

As you see plenty of possibilities, which cant be ruled out with these pics. Most of them are too dark to see the stones or qualifiy them.

The three stones look like rubies to me. I am not sure how the diamond tester behave on ruby. I have never seen bright colour red garnet IRL.

Thank you for your feedback. I have the basic and simple diamond tester - diamond selector 2. It has 3 types of light indicators : green -> yellow -> red. I was told that corundum testing lights up yellow indicators and sometimes even 1-2 red indicators. Red indicators reserved for diamonds, however in case of real diamonds tester produces much more powerful signal and all 4 red indicators light up.

This looks like a "Mother's ring" probably in 10k gold.
These were super popular in the 70s and 80s. You could get them made with all your kid's birthstones.
All the jewelry stores/catalogs had them. I have seen this style many times.
I would be willing to bet that these stones are synthetic.
Go to Ebay and search for "mother's ring 10k" and you will see many similar rings.
Here is one almost like yours:

All natural and lab rubies will fluoresce under a UV light. Garnet (red anyway), as far as I know, does not fluoresce.

Thank you, very interesting, I didn't know that it is some standard design ring. The one I got has "sterling" stamp inside, but 2 very small stones on perpendicular extensions are real diamonds.
