I had mentioned in Katebar''s thread about a tourmaline in a legacy setting that I was setting a tourmaline in a rather pricy setting also. I received the cad images from the jeweler for this setting, and I wanted to get opinions on whether the halo overpowers the stone. So, let me know what you think.

You have to like it, in the end... But you asked... Firstly how big is the center stone? I am one of those that thinks the halo should be as small as possible, espicially when you are trying to show off a gorgeous sizable stone. If you are trying to make a smaller stone look bigger, then there is room to work with...

Thank you for your very quick response. The stone isn''t that large. I don''t remember the exact measurements, but it''s around 8mm X 6mm. So, do you think the halo is fine for a stone this size?

I always have a hard time visualizing from CAD images. Is the stone set higher than the halo or is it set into the halo? That always makes a difference for me. I am also one that likes a smaller halo so that the stone itself takes all the glory if you know what I mean.

I''m not too good with these cad images either. I don''t think I specified whether I want the tourmaline set above the halo or in it, so I''m not sure myself how it will be set. From the paper work I have the diamonds in the halo will be 1.3 mm with milgrain around the halo. 1.3 mm seems small, but I think I remember people that have had 1 mm diamond haloes. I could be wrong though.

1.3 isn''t large espicially if there is going to be miligrain on the edge of it. I can''t tell squat from Cads either. I remember then I first started posting here someone put up a cad and the prongs stood about an inch higher than the stone (literally) and I caommented on how different it was and why they chose that... I was quickly told that it was an exaggeration as most cads are... My bad! so it may be just fine, I would just express your concern to the jeweler now so that they fully understand. Maybe ask them the size of the stone in the halo, and be sure it is only one row on the top.

Thanks, I did just email the jeweler asking if I could have 1 mm diamonds in the halo instead of the 1.3 mm ones they planned on using. So, I''ll see what the response is.

It seems like, in general, CADs and even waxes are more "bulky" looking than the actual finished setting will be. I seem to remember several pieces on here where the final product was much daintier in the end. But overall I agree with what''s been said already about preferring a smaller halo

Well, his response was that the overpowering effect is an illusion. He thinks we should go with 1.3 mm stones. I think also that I was getting mm dimensions mixed up with carat weight. 1.3 mm diamonds are probably 1 pointers or even smaller. I think most of the halo rings I''ve seen on here use 1 pointers, so that''s probably the way to go. Thanks everyone for your help.

Well, I got my ring today and boy it looks big on my short little fingers. I''ll try to post pics tomorrow...

I look forward to seeing it. I hope you like your new bling :)

Lemme get off topic for a second... did you pick the name coda (children of deaf adults) because your parents are deaf?

Is it tomorrow yet?! I missed out on when you first started this post and can''t wait to see the finished product!

I''m going to put pics in SMTR right now. (My screen name comes from the first two letters of my first name and first two letters of my middle name. Sorry I didn''t know if was an acronym for anything else. I hope I''m not using it improperly.)

Here''s one pic that I posted in SMTR. I''m thinking of getting a plain wedding band to wear with it and wear it as my wedding set occasionally.
