Hello, I recently purchased this sapphire, and I'm trying to decide if I should keep it or return it and keep looking. It's my first gemstone purchase, and I probably shouldn't have been so impulsive. It has a roulette cut, and I'm having a hard time finding out if that is a desirable cut or what it even means exactly. The description says it has a high crown. It appears to have a small table(? top face; unsure of proper terminology). I don't know what lighting they used, but I haven't found one that brings out the vivid color of the picture. My intention was to set this in a rose gold ring setting, but I don't know how the odd cut, high crown, and small table translates to a ring. Will it look awkward? Will it look nice, and I'm overthinking it? Did I overpay? Will the rose gold make it look more green? Should I return it and keep looking? I just have a lot of questions, so I figured I'd ask the experts. Thank you for any help may give.

Can you post some of your own pics? My first thought is that you should return it, because you shouldn’t have any doubts no matter what the cost.

Can you post a photo of it in real life? Have you received it yet?

Do you like it?

I'm not an expert at all (haha very far from it) but I I think it is SO important that you like a stone. For that much money it should give you the thrills and giggles and a lot of joy!

You can get all the advice in the world but jewellery should make you happy or appeal to you in some way.

PS has been amazing in terms of putting me in touch with trustworthy vendors that others have had good experiences with but I always buy whatever I like at the end of the day. Even if it's weird to everyone else

I can't decide how I feel about it. I keep looking at it at different points throughout the day, and in different lighting trying to decide. I'm thinking of putting it on a ring for my fiancee but Idk how it will look. I posted some pictures with and without flash. The flash really brings out the color. Also I added some profile views to see if the cut is awkward.20171219_194316.jpg 20171219_194229.jpg 20171219_194204.jpg 20171219_193437.jpg 20171219_193512.jpg 20171219_193627.jpg 20171219_194316.jpg

Eh. I'd call it olive green in your photos. Take some pics outside tomorrow in the sun.

I think you can find something much nicer for that budget.

To me, that colour is ok but not super fabulous. I don’t like it’s shape. If you’re setting in a ring, it is going to sit very high on your finger and need a lot of claw length to secure. Also, because carat weight is a weight, size wise it is visually smaller - I prefer a much lower table so you get more spread ie width. Most your carat weight is top to bottom - which you can’t really notice and not side to side size..

Is it a Montana Sapphire? If so, then be aware that they are notorious shifters.

OP - since this ring is for your fiancé, I hope you let her see it before you decide to keep it and follow through with setting it. See in multiple indoor/outdoor lighting, direct and diffused. Curious to know what lighting the vendor used if you cannot replicate it, tho.
X2 if it's for the engagement ring.
That said- the cut is not akward, just different. Same with the color.
Not for everybody, but not 'wrong'.
I would not want to own a stone set in jewelry that I strongly disliked in a certain lighting that I encountered frequently.
That said- elle_71125 recently had a beautiful custom ring made for a deep stone. Somewhat deep like yours, but not exactly so. I didn't run the numbers- just my first thought.
I hope you do post more pictures.

I once purchased a Montana Sapphire. I saw other Pricescopers who had beautiful rings made with Montana Sapphires and I really wanted one.

The one I bought was gorgeous in the sun, but wasn't very pretty indoors.
Like Chrono said, they are very shifty.

I couldn't see paying a large amount of money for a stone I only liked outdoors, so I sent it back.

Maybe I didn't get a good one, maybe there are some that look good in all lighting, I don't know. But you should love any stone you spend lots of money on.

You shouldn't have any doubts, as PP have said.
My personal opinion, it's too dark indoors. The stone looks flat in your photos. For something as important as an engagement ring, I'd keep looking.

I don't care for the color. And the shape will mean you will need to go custom. Please involve your fiancé in picking out the stone. She is the one who will be wearing it.

It looks very dark and not very sparkly in the lighting your photos were taken in. For an e ring I personally would want something with more sparkle.

For me I would not like to keep a stone that only performs well in a certain light. What are the chances that you will be in that lighting often. I agree that you should involve your other half in the process. Just in case she doesn’t like what you choose. That would be awful and disappointing for both of you.

Thanks for the concerns. She is involved in the process, but very indecisive. I'm not a jewelry guy(barely even worn a watch) and have no eye for this stuff. I appreciate everyone's input. I've attached some of the stone under my florescent lights at work and some outside with an overcast.

I don't know... these pics look better but I'm not screaming "keep it" in my head...

What do YOU think?

What were you going for when you bought it? Have you contacted gemfix to see what else they have?

A teal sapphire was the goal. I was going to spend a couple days thinking it over before I contacted gemfix. My initial reaction was return it and find something brighter. I like the color and the shift in certain lights. It really grays out in my poorly lit apartment(first batch of pictures) but my understanding is a lot of sapphires will do that. I guess I want something that's more eye catching and easier to appreciate but the sapphire keeps growing on me.

They are hard to photograph also....

I like the high crown of the gemstone.

Color is a personal choice. It does seem to be pretty dark in some of your pictures. The gem seems a bit darker in the vendor's video than the still shot.

I noticed the gem is unheated. Is that an important factor for you?

A suggestion: Look around for some other sapphire's that look good to you.........use the collective wisdom of this forum to whittle down a few choices. Many here are good at hunting if you give them parameter's..............then order a few of them so they can be viewed at the same time. I think your GF will be more decisive if she has choices--same could happen for you. One stone does not a choice make.............especially if there is doubt involved. And my guess is that this stone will still be available so you could possibly revisit it for comparison if you are still interested in it. Just an optional way to look at the situation................good luck!!

I have a raspberry rhodolite with a similar cut with a high crown by Gary Braun at Finewater. I haven’t had it set yet but I think it will be kind of princessy set up high. I’m looking forward to it. I like the cut on yours and I think it’s a cut that fosters sparkle.

The stone you’re looking at looks very pretty in brighter light. I think for an engagement ring you want something that performs well in lots of light conditions and isn’t prone to graying out or turning muddy in the dark. It seems a lot of PSers like the lighter, brighter colored stones for that reason. Congratulations on your relationship, and happy Gem hunting!

I would ask gemfix if they have anything in inventory which is closer to what you are describing. This one is too olive green, it doesn't match the verbal description you are giving at all.

Totally agree @Looking4Guidance. I received a yellow sapphire engagement ring last Thursday. It is sparkly and shiny and colorful in all sorts of lighting...remember too that the setting could darken the stone further if you enclose/surround it. Just trying to help make your decision easier. That particular stone seems very dark and it doesn't sound like that's what you're looking for. But if it grows on you, that's wonderful too :D
