Okie ladies...if all goes as planned, FFI and all his groomsmen will be wearing kilts for our wedding. IF thats the case then FFI will have on one kilt print and tyhe guys another. So my question is about the girls dresses. Im getting mixed votes as to weither the dresses should be colors taken from the lilts? OR is it ok to use ANY color? I originally thought that they shouild both match...but SOOOO many people are telling me they dont have to and it would look fine if they didnt. So...I''d like your opinions please. Oh kilts main colors would either be green, blue or red. or a combo of them.

No they shouldn't match.

You should wear your clan kilt, so most people will have different ones. Most clans have 3 different tartans - one for each of dress, hunting and everyday, and a dress tartan should be worn for a wedding.

If you don't have a clan, there are a number of tartans that you can wear - these are 'Black Watch', 'Stewart Hunting' and 'Royal Stewart'. It's not considered good form to wear a tartan to which you are not entitled.

You also need the right dress jacket with silver buttons and bits, matching sporrans are also a no-no. Remember the skien duhbs (decorative knife)to go in the wool kilt socks!

Also shoes with brouges.

My brother is wearing our clan tartan to my wedding and his own. He gets stopped all the time in the street in London by people saying "Ah ha, a MacKay', often they are other members of the clan. (MacKay is not my surname, as members of a clan do not often have the same surname or the name of the clan as their surname).

Pandors, Thanks for the reply. I know about the clan tartans and most having 3 and all that. My bf is Irish. So...am I understanding you correctly that the girls dresses should NOT be a color from the groomsmens kilts? They should be whatever colors we choose?

Do you know what the colours in the wedding party''s kilts will be, since it''s dependent on what clan they''re from?

I only know BFs tartan colors which are hunter green and royal blue w/a lil bit of goldosh yellow. The Groomsmen arent irish so they will have one of they 3 listed above by Pandora. but which one has yet to be decided

Irish kilts are different from Scottish ones - you don''t have the clan problem.

What I have seen done before is having the bridesmaids matched to each groomsman.

As in they wear a shawl in the same tartan as each guys kilt.

Otherwise, they can wear what ever you want them to wear - there are no rules that say you have to be matchy matchy!

ok thanks. I orriginally figured...lets say that the groomsmens kilts are mainly red...that i''d put the girls in red dresses. And some agreed that thats how it would look best and then others said no...if the guys kilts are red...you can put the girls in yellow, red, purple, blue...whatever color YOU want and it would be fine. I just want it all to look nice lol
