I am toying with the idea of trying to find an expensive orange stone. I don''t have a preference of what type (garnet, sapphire, etc)... whatever cheaper LOL! My sister is getting married this summer and the bridesmaids are wearing pool blue dresses and carrying orange flowers. I think it would be fun to find a chunky orange stone to wear on my right hand. I don''t want or need an elaborate setting, and would prefer a cushion, but am open to other shapes, except princess and trillion cuts.

Does anyone have recommendations?

did you mean you're looking for an INexpensive orange stone? if so, citrine is probably your best bet. pretty sure it is usually less expensive than garnet and definitely less than sapphire, especially if you're looking for something large.

ETA: this one's a little on the yellow side, but has an interesting cut. http://www.diamondexpert.com/diamonds/dbs.cgi?sf=detg.setup.cgi&active=active&stock=CT00260&submit_search=1

ETA2: this tourmaline has a more orange color, and a cool shape http://www.customgemstones.com/TOURMALINE/to939.html

Yes I''m looking for something inexpensive. Thanks for the links, but I''m looking for something more orangey. I probably won''t be able to find the color I''m looking for.

Another color that caught my eye was a deep colored blue zircon. I saw a few on ajsgems.com.

don''t give up so quickly! just like diamonds, these stones come in a wide range of colors and qualities. it might help if you let folks know a little more about what you''re looking for. it is helpful to know that you want something less red than the tourm but less yellow than the citrine posted above. how important is cut? what size is "chunky" to you? how much are you looking to spend?

I don''t want to be too picky on the details because it''s just going to be fun ring, so in this case I want to go more for size (I''d like at least 2cts if possible) and color. I don''t care if it''s heated, and I don''t know anything about cut so I can''t answer that. I want to do this pretty cheaply...no more than $300 for the stone, preferably less. I do want as bright orange as possible...not yellow or brown.

as far as size, keep in mind that 2cts means many different things depending on the cut and gem involved. i would stick to looking at measurements to get an idea of how big the stone will be. especially in non-custom cut stones, you may find that a lot of them are cut for carats, not visibile face-up size. there are a number of recent threads discusing different shapes and why ovals are so common.

You might think I''m nuts, but if you''re looking for a fun, inexpensive ring, with a real gemstone I''d look on QVC. Do a search on citrine rings. There''s a bunch of gaudy, awful stuff of course, but there''s a few in there with relatively simple settings and interesting stones. There''s a 4.25ct citrine asscher ring that might be kind of fun. Just a thought!
