13259895-D6F0-41A5-9A13-17ACC17D4250.jpeg For many of us I think our mothers engagement rings has a story. My mother hated hers! Her wedding was arranged and typically that does not include you choosing your own ring! Also at that time in my country getting pure gold was hard. It was in fact more common to have a mixed metal which looked like silver plus something else. It’s harder than gold to the touch. Jewellers can’t even tell what that metal is now!

Even though my mom doesn’t like it, I really do! It looks like an antique style ring to me and she told me to take it because she literally never wore it. Just took some diamonds out and replaced with zircons so she could make a ring more to her taste!

So here’s my mom’s engagement ring! Do share yours and the story behind it !

I don’t have a picture at the moment, but I’ll share a story about my mom. She didn’t get an engagement ring when she got married (wasn’t customary in her home country) but when I got mine, started going on and on about how she wished that she had a ring. So my sister and I pooled our money and bought her a gorgeous dark red garnet from Jeff Davies, her birthstone (“thank goodness Mom wasn’t born in a month with a really expensive stone”, said my sister) and had my dad set it in white gold with little diamond rounds on either side. She LOVES it and not only wears it all the time but has now gotten into other colored stones as well - we bought her a peridot set in a halo last Mother’s Day and now she alternates then depending on what she’s wearing that day. More recently she’s started going on about a wedding band - well, we told our (somewhat bemused) Dad that that’s his job ;)2

That is such a sweet story! It great fun to buy mom jewellery. My mom always thought coloured stones look fake. Said “ don’t waste your money, they have no resale value etc etc”. But when she saw the fine American precision cut ones I’ve been buying she totally changed her mind!! She keeps wanting to take my stuff o_O.

Now I’m planning to get her the best- a Barry Bridgestock electric blue topaz as a surprise. I can’t wait to see the look on her face!
Her generation had its treasures, my generation has its own ;)2

I’d love to see the garnet and peridot you got your mom!

My mother has been married 4x. She lost one of her rings which was a marquise. She also had a 3 stone ring of sapphire and diamond. She still wears that even though it was from husband #3 and she's currently with husband #4 lol.

My stepmother didn't get an engagement ring, instead she got an anniversary/Christmas ring that my father and I picked out. It's a 3 stone with sapphires and center diamond. She was so surprised and she wears it every day.

My mum didn't have an engagement ring, she had a gold watch instead. I've no idea where my love of diamonds comes from as my sister isn't interested in them either - she had an aquamarine ER. I love coloured stones too though; I'm just a magpie I guess :D

Just wanted to add that my parents will be married for 58 years in 2 weeks time. I think it would last longer if she'd have had a diamond though!

My mom had a platinum solitaire ER, but when my brother wanted to get engaged she gave it to him. I think she knew my dad would replace it with a bigger stone - which he did! When she passed away he gave me her 2.25 CTW diamond. I had it recut my Brian Gavin and now it's just over 2 ctw. It's in a 3 stone ring with 1 ct sapphires on each side. For our next big anniversary I want o upgrade to even better sapphires. The color is gorgeous, but they're a tad dark for my taste.

I love your mom's ER Gemobsessed. It does look antiquey and romantic. So lovely!

My mom's ER and the story behind it. My parents were engaged 6 weeks after meeting and got married 6 months later without any ER (they married with a gold band for each of them) as my dad had no money to purchase one. A year later when he established his practice he bought my mom this platinum solitaire ER which she still happily wears 54 years later.

She had an arthritic shank added to to it a few years ago due to her severe arthritis but otherwise it remains unchanged from the day my dad gave it to her.

My mother has had a few upgrades over the years, getting bigger and bigger. Her last upgrade came about in unfortunate circumstances. Mum took a nasty fall on the garden stairs and hit her hand on the sandstone wall as she fell. She broke her wrist but was totally devastated that she had chipped her diamond. She rang me in tears and by the by mentioned the broken wrist! No insurance. Dad gave her another upgrade and my idea was to bezel set the diamond for a necklace. Only if you look closely you can see the stone is damaged. So at least we repurposed the poor chipped diamond.

Hey that’s a great idea! I am so glad you found a fix. In such a situation is recutting a possibility I wonder?

My mum's is a yellow gold sapphire cluster (like a star shaped cluster). I believe it was about £50 in the early 1970s. The sapphire is quite dark, almost black. She doesn't wear it any more because its too small.

My mom was a plain-jane kind of person. When my parents got engaged my dad asked if she’d like a ring and she said no. At some point after getting married she changed her mind, so Dad bought her a basic .66ct round diamond in a thin, gold, solitaire setting. She rarely wore it, but I do have memories of seeing it on her hand.

For their 20th anniversary she said she wanted a diamond anniversary band; Dad thought it was funny since she wasn’t a jewelry person but he still got her one, and it too spent the majority of its life in her jewelry box. Mom most often was seen with a simple 2mm gold band and super small gold hoop earrings.

After she passed, Dad gave me both the solitaire and anniversary band. Next month will be five years since she we lost her and I’m currently having all of the diamonds set in a custom pendant; I hope to have it in hand in the next few weeks. The XO’s on the side are because she ALWAYS signed her notes to us with “XOXO...”, and the hearts on the back are self-explanatory =)2

Sorry about your mum. However that is a beautiful story and I love your pendant. What a fabulous and meaningful design. A future family heirloom. Cherish it always.

@ILikeShiny - that's a beautiful pendant.

My mum also asked for a new band (well, she wanted a new wedding set) for a recent anniversary. (They recently celebrated their 35th) but it hasn't happened yet. They were looking at UK high street jewellers and we suggested going to the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham, which might give them better value for money. I hope my Dad gets her something nice soon. :kiss2::halo:

My mamma’s new ring I found for her
