Sorry I couldn''t find an old topic on this, so forgive me if it''s a repeat question.

We''re looking into buying a garment bag/suitcase to check for our flight to Minneapolis in August. My DH needs to transport his armani suit and I am wearing a silk shantung dress that has a tiny bit of poof to it to my stepbro''s wedding. We''d also like to pack a couple more items to keep them relatively uncrushed.

I''m also packing a hand held steamer for when we get there. Do the garment suitcases work? Will our items come through relatively uncrushed or is there a better way to do this? I thought about carring them on the plane and hoping they could get hung in a closet but I highly doubt they''d have room for our outfits.

I think the answer to your question is, it depends.

I have never had a problem with the garment bag luggage crushing my clothes, but I have never traveled by plane with a silk dress either. I know samsonite (maybe other manufacturers do too) has a hard garment bag with wheels that doesn''t crush, but it''s definitely not carry-on. I would contact the airline and see if they can offer suggestions. I remember Keeping the Faith and her wife traveled with their wedding dresses by plane and they were able to get a flight attendant to hang it.

put them individually in plastic garmet bags before packing. Don't use dry cleaner's bags, b/c I read somewhere that those have so many chemicals still on them that they are really bad to keep your clothes in. I went to a wedding recently and packed a silk dress and a linen dress this way and both had a few wrinkles, but they fell out after hanging them in the bathroom while showering.

That was WishfulThinking. Keeping the Faith is straight.

Yeah I don''t want to carry them on, I''m fine with checking them as long as they don''t get destroyed in transit. I have the hand steamer. We were thinking of getting something similar to this type of bag.

This one''s pretty pricey though.

Anyone know what size is good to get? The one I posted is pretty big.

My SO has a case similar to this and he traveled with 3 suits, several ties, and 6 dress shirts to Dubai out of the SE United States. The case also had spots for his cuff links, dress socks, undershirts, and even his dress shoes, all arrived relatively unscathed and he was able to spend a week there in his attire (for a conference) and they returned well too. His got his from a AAA dealer and much more reasonable rate than that, his is by American Traveler if I''m not mistaken.

Goodluck!

I flew with my wedding dress to Italy(!). We used the big garment bag my dress came in (all 6 feet long and poofy). We went through security and checked in with no problem--and a lot of smiles

The flight attendants on all of our flights were very nice and all of them offered to hang it up in the closet right away without being asked. Everyone was actually super accomodating and nice about it!
