Thoughts? 3.9 carat Panjshir emerald with .90 carat diamond halo. Emerald is from Afghanistan but was set in white gold with diamonds in India. I have seen a lot of Panjshire emeralds as well as fake emeralds. Price is USD 1,800. I'm undecided on whether or not it's worth the price.

The picture is not only way too small to discern much from it, but I would never buy an emerald without a reputable lab report from AGL.

3.9 ct for only $1800? That is extremely inexpensive. Do you know what it is treated with and the extent of the treatment?

It is mined in Afghanistan. Gems are relatively cheap here especially the Panjshir emeralds which are mind locally. I have bought a lot of tanzanite and locally mined rubies and tourmaline from the jewelry over the past 2 years so he usually gives me a good price. I'm sure it's heat treated. I'm not looking for investment or resale.

This is the largest emerald I have looked a so I was just wondering if it was way over priced. No way to get it evaluated locally.

Treatment makes a huge difference; do you know whether it has been dyed, oiled, resin filled, reconstituted or anything? In actuality, the closer one is to the mines, the more likely it is to be synthetic, treated or a simulant. Emeralds are not heated. Nobody can tell you anything about the pricing unless we know exactly what it is, whether it is treated and the level of treatment.

Okay, I'll take it around to a few of the jewelers and see what they say about the treatment(s). Thanks!

THat won't do, you HAVE to get an AGL report that determines the type, and amount of treatment. Most jewelers don't know their head from a hole in the ground when it comes to emeralds.

I agree with TL and Chrono - Panjshir Emeralds ( and this is a big one!!) are def. not cheap - i think a local jeweller is not able to help you.

Send it to AGL - imo it is impossible to get a 3,9 ct emerald for 500$ - usually material ( gems and metal) is around 30% of the total price.

Could be synthetic, a dublet too.

I have some small Panjshir emeralds - 500 EUR pct for 0,2-0,3 ct stones. Larger good emeralds from this source are really rare!!

Be careful!!
