Hi everyone... New member here. I found this forum while searching for a Pearl Necklace (Freshwater or better 16-18 in, 8-9mm white) for my wife. Yes, I''m cutting it real close by shopping this late but nevertheless, I was hoping that someone
could recommend a place to buy a Fresh Water pearl Necklace in an around Toronto, Ontario (Canada). I prefer to deal with actual stores rather than online. Are stores such as Birks etc really overcharging that much?

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks,

Eric

Hello Eric,

Considering that Christmas is still a week away, I''d say you''re getting your shopping done early!

I am not familiar with the store you mentioned, but I applaud you for wanting to deal locally. Having a rapport with a local jewelry store can be an advantage. I think it unfair to comment on store prices, as that will fluctuate depending on quality of the item and location of the store. The same item (jewlery, clothing, flowers) will cost one price in NYC, and a different (probably lesser) price in Tampa, FL.

What you will want to do is look at several strands to compare quality. A good quality freshwater pearl of 8 - 9mm will have a very clean surface. No dull areas, no milky looking pearls, no pits or indentations in the surface. If there are these types of characteristics, that will be reflected in the price.

By the way, a jump from 8mm to 9mm will also be reflected in price.

Ask the jewelry sales clerk to show you a fine strand, then ask to see one of lesser or greater quality so that you can see the difference. Then you can decide which necklace is best for you.

Hope this helps, good luck.

julie.

Hi Eric,

Tiffany''s = Way overcharging (3X - 5X more than online) and I wasn''t impressed with their pearls.
.
Birks = 8 - 8.5mm Freshwater strand strong rose overtone, as nice as I have seen in Freshwater about $1600.
Freshadamas from Pearlparadise.com online 8 - 9mm a whole set with 14% discount only $950 USD. Necklace only for like $700 or so. Also they have fast shipping so you could make it on time.

The bay also had pearls with comparable lustre to Freshadamas so I''m sure there are other stores as well but B&M stores will be twice the price to more in general.

If you look at my other recent thread I preferred the Birks ones to the Freshadamas but strands may vary the differences were noticeable but suttle. The Birks ones were smaller and weren''t worth twice as much money in my opinion, and I would still purchase from PP.

Also you should be very careful in B&M stores to check not only lustre but roundness and surface blemishes the PP pearls were near perfect most I''ve seen in stores except for Birks were some slightly off round and with blemishes looking up close.

Good-luck,

CCL
