I have a collection of pendants I wear every day but today my daughter referred to it as a 'rat king' (if you don't know what this is look it up, you'll get nightmares). Do you think it looks that bad? They all have special meaning to me. Or can you think of a better way of holding them?

If it means something special to you, wear it your way. Don't care too much about what other people say, maybe because they don't understand what it means to you. I find it beautiful.

Firstly, taste is personal, so if you love it, rock it!
For my own taste, I'd split the charms in half to make 2 necklaces - one in a white metal with all the charms set in white gold/silver/platinum, and one using the chain in your photo , plus the yellow gold charms.
Again - for my own taste and to my eye - I think that would show them off better so each would be a tad more central and "on display". For example, the ladybird and the owl are similar in style, and each would make a lovely central charm. Together, they compete a trifle.
I wear pendants with multiple charms often and have a number of them. I find 2 or 3 to be the optimum number, with 3 as a max. After that, they get lost.
But if you're after sentiment more than a particular aesthetic, then putting them all together might be more up your alley. And that might be the aesthetic you're after anyway!
For pure protection sake, I'd set that EC diamond in a bezel setting. And I have to say, that, with the owl and the star, would make a killer diamond necklace!
Whatever you do, enjoy these lovely sentimental pieces!
Attaching a photo of one of my recent combos for reference.
ETA. Ended up adding 2. Hope these are of use/interest.
Oh those are lovely! I've never been into charm necklaces, but you're changing my mind
Is the baguette diamond star vintage?
