I am somewhat interested to get a pink or purplish-pink topaz, but have been reading that many imperial topaz are not color-stable and fade after sunlight exposure. Considering that where I stay is hot and sunny practically all year round, clearly gems that can fade in sunlight isn’t the best option.

What has been your experience with pink or purplish-pink topaz? Am asking about these specific shades as I’m not interested in the orangey/sherry ones and the reddish ones will require a lottery win…

TIA!

Anyone?

I bought a beautiful pink topaz from a wonderful PSer. She had purchased it from Jeff White. When I spoke to Jeff, he said that the material is from Pakistan and he fade tests in for a very long time to make sure the color is stable. He said he has never had any issues with the material from Pakistan.

GEMS & GEMOLOGY Spring 1985 (Brazil);
«Natural pink topaz, however, is extremely rare; this color is usually obtained by heating certain yellow to reddish brown Brazilian material that contains the chromium required to produce pink. Only the chromium-caused origin of pink, stable to both light and heat, is certain.»

GEMS & GEMOLOGY Fall 1986 (Pakistan);
«The attractive pink color of topaz is caused by trace amounts of the Cr3+ ion; other topaz colors are due to color centers (Nassau, 1984). In accord, microprobe analyses of the Katlang pink topazes showed chromium-oxide contents of 0.01 to 0.03 wt.% that correlate with the intensity of color. No color change was observed in specimens that had been exposed to the hot summer sun of Peshawar (38'-48'C) for 65 days (Jan, 1979).»
