I''m working on a project. DH is going to buy me 3 bands to stack over the next year. A blue sapphire one for our son, a pink for our daughter due in Sept. and a diamond one for our anniv. I already have the diamond & blue sapphire rings picked out at my jeweler, but the pink sapphire one is 3 times the amount of the blue one ---I''m confused. Both sapphire rings are scattered with diamonds.

I don''t think the carat weights are that different. Both are set in wg.

Are pinks that much higher in cost than the blues? It doesn''t have to be a pink sapphire band, really, and nice pink stone will do, but I''d like it to be nice enough to hand down to her someday.

Thank you!

Hmmmm, pink sapphire bands should not cost more than blue. SP makes gorgeous pink sapphire bands. And don''t let the Maternity Band page fool you. They will make them in your choice of metal and style. The prices are good too!

Blue sapphires usually cost more than the pinks, but then again, it depends on the quality of the stones. I agree that both sapphires usually cost the same if they are of like quality purchased from the same vendor. I second SP''s maternity rings: very pretty and a good price.

I believe pink sapphires are more rare than blue sapphires, but since blue is more in demand, it is more expensive.

Absolutely. It''s all about what is marketable.

I had my local jeweler find a sapphire for me last fall to put in a right hand ring and he told me that the blue ones are quite a bit more expensive than the pink.

I happen to believe that pink sapphires are a great buy. I think they had a high point when there was the pink diamond craze a few years back due to the J.Lo engagement ring. Pink is a difficult color to find in nature, especially in untreated gemstones, so that''s why I like them. NSC has many untreated pink sapphires.

My pink sapphire wasn't as expensive as one of my blue ones. They are both about 1.35 carats and came from the same store. With the blue ones, the price might depend on whatever shade of blue they are. I also think demand has a lot to do with it - pink ones are fairly new to most people.

Agreed. It really seems odd that the pink band you want is so much more. This might be a stupid question, but they aren''t pink diamonds right?

I had that thought too Neatfreak...

This is like asking, "Is a Mercedes more expensive than a BMW?" It depends on the stone.

Pink stones of all types have been hot for the last few years, so the prices have definitely gone up. However, it''s important to remember that a "pink sapphire" is really nothing more than a pale ruby.

All other things being equal, a top blue sapphire will command a higher price than a top pink sapphire, but a top ruby will outprice both.

I find it difficult to think of spending 3 times more on pink sapphs than blue, partly because I still consider pink sapphs a marketing ploy to sell low-grade rubies. They can be quite pretty, though, but unless the blues are really poor quality the pinks shouldn''t cost THAT much more.

I think there might be more going on with that ring....here''s a pic of it so you all know what i''m talking about.

I looked at the Signed Pieces website & their plain sapphire bands are beautiful, but they aren''t "this" one, if you KWIM.
