pink tourmaline for my mum''s 60th

Hi

I am trying to find my mum a 60th birthday present. Her birthstone is opal but she is not a fan, an alternate birthstone is pink tourmaine. is this stone hard enough to set in a ring or pendant for everyday wear?

My mum loves chunky (lol) yellow gold jewellery, so any suggestions where I can get some stones for a largish pendant or preferaly a site that will match both for me. A ring is another alternative I am looking at. I really have no idea what I am doing and am on a budget, so please please kind coloured stones experts point me in the right way.

I don't think tourmaline is durable enough for an everyday stone, although it's certainly durable to wear in a ring every once in a while. If you're hard on jewelry, I would set it in a pendant. JMO.

I have a tourmaline in my engagement ring and haven''t had any problems. However, I baby it and am VERY careful with it and don''t wear it to do anything hard on my hands.

One option is www.gemhut.com. You can select the stone and the setting, and they''ll take care of the rest (for a small fee, of course.) The problem is tht they don''t have a photo listing of their calibrated stones. Since pink tourmaline comes in a wide range of shades -- from sweek bubble-gum pink, to bold raspberry, to deep coppery pink -- you''d have to describe the shade you want and see if they have it, or see if they can provide some photos of stones they have in the size you want.
