Planning a ring for my impulsive tanzanite purchase

Starting a new thread for some design inspiration & fun while I wait for this stone to arrive (impatiently).

Had my heart set on an emerald for marking my 40th but realised budget really didn't extend to the size or vivid colour I wanted.

Browsing recommended IG accounts for coloured stones and saw @premiergemstones post this - I have never thought of tanzanite as so intense and stunning (I know there is a huge variation in colour) but something about it just grabbed me and I grabbed it!

It is 9.10 x 6.7 mm.

I want to design a ring that has it as the focus, I like the idea of platinum, thinking something vaguely celestial as it reminds me of a night sky with stars.

Any ideas?

I'm terrible at this, but thought I'd give it a try anyway! Are these too literal?

You'll receive some fine suggestions from other PSers, I'm sure. Good luck, and congrats again on that beautiful tanzie!!

Tanzanite is a brittle stone, so I would get a protective type of design. Even better, I would do a pendant. I would do a softer metal than platinum as well. I would not bezel.

Ah, ok. So something to wear everyday - probably means ring is not a good plan.

Oh no :(

Will have to think about a pendant then.

Gorgeous stone!

I've been trying off and on to come up with a design for a beach/ocean ring and have just about given up because I can't get it where I'd be confident enough that I'd like the results. Everything I can find or think of seems too literal for what I want or too "different" to want to risk the money on or etc. So personally I've found a theme ring hard to do in a way that I know I'd like, but I wish you luck!

Another idea is to just have the night sky type symbol/s that you like engraved in the band.

If you do make this into a ring, I'd suggest having it prong set. That way if the softer stone does get beat up, you can at least salvage the rest of the ring, whereas the setting would be ruined if you had to remove the stone from a bezel setting. Also because bezels can make a stone appear darker.

You could also consider a convertible ring, that could be worn as a ring and a pendant.

Cheyenne Weil can be found on Instagram and I swear she can carve anything out of wax!!!! I haven’t worked with her yet but definitely on my list for a few gems I have unset. I’d imagine she could have a few good ideas for celestial.

Also, Raintree has some really fantastical work!

In my view nothing shows off a brilliantly blue tanzanite better than a diamond halo. The halo also offers some protection against the bumps and bruises of daily wear.

There are versions of this simple halo that can help the diamonds look like stars in the sky. It should be fun finding the one for you.

That's lovely, @prs! I like the larger diamonds you used here, as opposed to more of a micro pave. You do love your pear shapes, don't you?! :kiss2:

Hi Autumn, If I had my way all our gemstones would be pears, fortunately my wife has more sense! =)2

My rule of thumb on halo diamond size is 20% of the width of the center stone, but for sure that's not cast in stone. It always amazes me how much a small change in diamond size can really impact the overall look of a piece.

@Mondayschild has found herself a truly gorgeous tanzanite. Her ring is going to be fabulous no matter the setting!

The nice thing about pears is how spready they are. You really get the very most out of the stone's weight. :cool2:

@Mondayschild that's such a gorgeous stone! Tanzanites are one of my favorites, and I'm also struggling with setting ideas for a similarly sized trillion cut stone right now. Can't wait to see what you end up doing with yours!

Coffin and Trout in Arizona has some really cool designs. This one springs to mind and being celestial.

With a pendant, you could set it with softer stones like opals as the "stars" around the moon. Whatever you decide to do, I'm sure it'll be fabulous!

Hi Daisy, in England, when I was growing up, it was not usual for men to wear rings. In fact many men didn't even wear their wedding rings, including all the men in my extended family. As a result my wedding ring has spent the last forty years in one of my personal drawers.

However recently, I have been thinking it was about time I put on a ER/wedding ring. In an estate jewelry store, I saw a gorgeous ruby cabochon set as a man's ring. It looked very manly to me, and I was on the verge of buying it until I examined it more closely with my loupe. OMG after that it was never going to be eye clean!!! Now I know why some rubies end up as cabochons! :eek-2: :eek-2: :eek-2:

However, the idea is now firmly in my mind, and I even have an "inspiration".

Im so excitted
I love men's jewlery
I think i love the bigger settings conspired to a lot of laddies' rings

I look forward very much to following the journey of your own ring !

But that's sad you don't wear your wedding ring
my mum and dad got married in '65 - NZ was very British then - so no wedding ring for dad but for their silver anniversary he got one and wore it from then on
although he did always wear a gold signet ring

Im very disappointed Prince William doesn't wear either a wedding or signet ring especially now he's not in any kind of occupation where jewlery could be a workplace hazard

Good luck finding the perfect ruby !!!!!

You could also post this setting on this thread as the OP was looking for a celestial kind of design. I would post it and credit/quote you but wouldn't want to come off as rude.

Are you heavy handed? If no, then wearing a Tanzanite daily is ok but do not get it near water or temperature changes ie putting your hands into a freezer or very hot when cooking. Overtime time, both MIGHT harm a tanzanite.

What a lovely saturated tanzanite! I can see this set in platinum, with the shank etched with a favorite constellation on each side, maybe with diamond melee as the stars, if your budget allows.
