I just happened to visit Mark Morrell''s site where he discusses the difference between Platinum 950 and 900 and why he prefers to use the 900 alloy? I understand the science and his reasoning totally in terms of long term wear and appearance, however, I am having a tough time finding other designers who use the Platinum 900 for their settings. Anyone know of any others besides Mark?

I''m not sure of any specific designers, but my e-ring is in the 900 alloy and I got it from a B&M in Boston (Shreve, Crump & Low). I didn''t get my wedding band from them and it''s in 950.

Sholdt. At least my e-ring is in 900 Platinum. Thinking that''s what they use with all their settings.

The only difference is when platinum is hand wrought.

It doesn’t matter what is used 950 or 900 or 960 ruthenium as Allen Cretes uses, when hand wrought, and all alloys wear the same.
You will never see any difference; this is only gossip to keep everybody talking.

The casting process is always looking for flow in the mold; there is no science in it beyond the ease to cast (to fill the mold) due to the high heat required 3,000 degrees +.

I worked in dental labs long enough to understand what Allen Cretes at www.ringlock.com explained to me before he made my ring.
Platinum should be hand wrought, as it is far superior to casting. Casting can be unstable.

Sincerely,

MB

Out of curiosity, anyone know what Leon Mege uses? 23rd St Jewelers? Maytal Hannah? Ari of Single Stone?

This weekend I went to 23rd St Jewelers and Single Stone. I thought 23rd St settings were very intricate and well done--pricey though. Single Stone was okay, nothing wowed me but Ari was spectacular in showing me everything about settings, very helpful and very nice.
