I have a pre-teen who has had pierced ears for 1.5 years. We took her to a reputable studio that only specializes in piercings but after trying multiple metals, we're fairly certain we need to go the platinum route.

Is it too much to get a child started on trade-in/upgradeable diamonds from a place like WhiteFlash? This is the most affordable qualifying set at the moment. About $1300 total for .60ctw with la pousette backs. https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-di...etails.aspx?diamond1=4472140&diamond2=4466359

Or, I could get her non upgradeable tiny .25 ctw platinum earrings for $650. https://www.whiteflash.com/diamond-earrings/3-prong-martini-diamond-earrings-7049.htm

Or, I could get her these adorable flower clusters at .25ctw for $995 with la pousette backs or $1,020 for it to dangle off lever backs.

Are there other better platinum options out there? We'd lose on the cost of a setting if we trade-up (about $400) so it's almost better to just get the cheapest solution and she can keep it, right?

She will want to wear her earrings 24/7 and she's athletic so we'll need something secure and comfortable. Thanks so much for reading!

wow - I would’ve been floored to get earrings like this as a preteen!

Personally I’d buy something you’d feel ok with if she loses (or loses one) - if she’s athletic, she may need to take them out for sporting events. I’d get a special pouch to keep them in!

I personally think the flower clusters feel the sweetest but I’m sure she’d be elated with any of these! The bigger studs or the clusters - if she happens to lose one, would be easy to convert into a pendant.

Personally, I think it’s a nice idea but I’d probably save diamond earrings for later, maybe sweet 16 or high school graduation.

Imo a pre-teen is likely to lose them, which could cause terrible feelings.

And may prefer a variety of fun, colorful, less expensive pairs anyway. (as inexpensive as platinum gets anyway). That’s what I liked as a pre-teen and teen anyway.

If that was part of what you were asking for opinions on… anyway, just my two cents. Good luck with it!

There are a ton of options here:

My daughter is 11 and got hers pierced last year. I had a terrible nickel allergy growing up so we’ve played it safe and only put 14-18k gold in her piercings. She leaves them in 24/7 EXCEPT to take them out for basketball games and that’s when we lose the backs. Doesn’t matter if they’re friction backs, screw-backs, poussette, they’re just tiny and easily dropped. My suggestion, whatever earrings you decide on, is to get several extra backs. Hope this helps!

No way would I spend that kind of money on earrings for a pre-teen. I would get her some simple everyday platinum earrings
and make sure that resolves her ear problem.

Maybe for her 16th birthday and after she's been wearing earrings for a while I would get some small diamond studs. YMMV...

Edit...I've also heard that small hoops (like really small), help let air get around the hole and dont keep it as moist. This may be
worth a try.

If you do go the diamond route, I'd go for the .25 presets. They are small, and comfortable (I have a pair). That said, I'd probably try a small, plain pair of ball studs or hoops first to make sure it fixes the issue!

We've tried 14k and 18k gold (yg). Unfortunately, she is also allergic to whatever alloys in those earrings. Believe me, I wish I could go a cheaper route and I've already spent quite a bit trying various metals.

Thank you all! I looked at the links provided! Platinum earrings in general are expensive. Whether it's Blue Nile or via Platinum Only, the cheapest generic ones are already $300+.

At that point, it's not that much more for the cheapest diamond presets from WF ...and then I thought...well, maybe I should start her on upgradeable stones anyway...it was a rabbit hole, but I wanted you all to see my thought process. Certainly it is extravagant for a child to wear real diamond/platinum jewelry...but there was a logical reason :)

Ah, I see. I didn’t realize platinum was that expensive! In that case, I’d probably go for the less expensive ones even though they can’t be traded in, because the cost difference is quite a bit and I’d still expect it’s likely they’ll be lost sooner or later by a kid.

If losing something that expensive would be a big thing to her (or to you!), I might even just let her ears close up. I don’t even like to buy expensive earrings for myself now because they’re so easy for me to lose, even as an adult.

Is there any chance nickel free stainless steel or rhodium plated would work? I’ve also seen plastic earring posts, post covers and wires.

And does she have a preference? At that age, I think I would have preferred something like smiley faces or daisies or colored stones over diamonds but of course that doesn’t mean your daughter would. But it looks like you could get two other pairs for the same cost as the small diamonds you listed.

I just remember getting my ears pierced at 11 and being thrilled to get new earrings whenever I got the chance. I loved them so much that I ended up collecting two earring trees full of colorful, cute but cheap pairs, which were my pride and joy. I don’t think I’d have enjoyed it nearly as much to have just one pair of diamond earrings. But of course her preference my differ and you can only do what you can do.

Just my random thoughts. Good luck!

Thank you for the suggestion. We've tried implant grade surgical steel along with a host of other readily available metals. I have considered glass and plastic, but I prefer something more durable, and those options aren't really cheap either. I've spent hundreds already and I don't want to waste any more money trying alternatives.

I will probably get the "cheap" ($200-$300 Mene options--thanks for the helpful recommendation, MayaLNayu!) or the $625 mini presets. Not worth letting the hole close up. It won't solve the problem of her metal allergies.

Appreciate all the input!

My vote is the presets given how expensive platinum is. They will last AGES. Can always get them insured, too, just I'm case if you want. :)

Did you try titanium? I'm sure you did, but just in case!

I can only wear platinum and sterling silver earrings. I know the frustration well.

+1 for the presets. I would ask Whiteflash if they can use the finest post they have and shorten the post for a child.

I didn't think about the post size. Excellent suggestion. Thanks for the tip!

I would get preset bezels that are small and not upgradeable. They'll be flush to the ear, and more comfortable for sports that don't require them to be removed, and look nice.

Ok, you are living my life!

We went round and round with my daughter’s ears for YEARS. She was fine with any and all metals and earrings when her ears were pierced, but her braces caused her to develop a nickel allergy (fun fact: arch wires used in orthodontics are 95% nickel).

Anyway, we did two rounds of metal testing to find that she has allergies to: nickel, cobalt, and copper. So we switched to platinum. And while she could tolerate them better, she still had some issues. Her ears would fill up with lovely gunk and get sore.

So we tried Blomdahl medical plastic, titanium, and finally we tried flat back earrings meant to be worn 24/7. BOOM.

A missing piece of the puzzle: her ears are intolerant to pressure from earring backs. Flat back earrings didn’t put pressure on the piercing, and that allowed her ears to really settle down.

I had gotten her a lovely pair of studs from HPD (very small, maybe .17 each?). They were in platinum with push backs. We changed the backs to la pousette backs and she can wear them on the latch so they do not push into her ears at all.

So I wanted to share this with you because I had never heard of ears reacting to pressure before this. Try either tiny hoops or leverbacks or flat backs or la pousette backs, as well as changing the metal.

My daughter is also an athlete, fwiw, so she also wanted small studs. She has gotten to the point where she *can* sleep in earrings, but she mostly does not.

Oh, and the best source we have found for flat back earrings is Maison Miru. They used to call them nap earrings but I think they’ve changed the name.

OMG, this is SO helpful! Thank you for taking the time to write this incredibly thoughtful reply. I'm going to ask about tiny hoops and if that doesn't pan out, I'll get the tiny presets with the la pousette backs.
