Having trouble deciding between platinum and 18k palladium white gold. It’s for a simple solitaire- no engraving or side stones. Thoughts? opinions? Pics?

Platinum. Love the weight, feels luxurious, love the way it wears.

Picking up my solitaire reset from WG into platinum tomorrow, so...

I have both.

Palladium tends to be more yellow white v the greyer white of platinum.

Finding someone to work on palladium can be harder too, if you want work done locally, depending on where you live. Sometimes jewelers don't work in palladium, so servicing the ring can be an issue. Palladium is also more difficult to size, to my knowledge, but I'm not a jeweler.

Palladium is a bit lighter than platinum, but both are good metals.

I think it depends on the stone.

If I wanted an overall warmer, creamy look I’d go with palladium

I tend to prefer cooler toned greys so will always choose platinum because it flatters my skin tone more, and I love the patina

Just FYI OP is asking about palladium mix 18K white gold (a naturally whiter mix of WG) rather than pure palladium.

I recently had a three stone pendant made by WF and chose white gold/palladium mix. I like the look of white gold but not the hassle of replating. Platinum is heavier but I personally don’t care for the patina. Really not a huge issue with earrings or pendants but I was pleased with the result. I had my earrings set in platinum but the metal for them was minimal.

For a simple soli - whatever’s cheaper

Both are sufficiently common choices that you shouldn’t have trouble matching bands, find benches willing to do repairs, etc. in the US, unless you live somewhere very isolated. I don’t think one grants behavioural value over the other for a simple plain-metal mount. Platinum - if you don’t care for patina - PT 950/Ru or PT 900/Ir, not PT 950/Ir.

I like the shiny white rhodium plating of WG more than the grey-white of platinum. Is palladium WG as white as rhodium plated WG? In that case I choose that one. If it’s yellow-white like unplated WG then I prefer plat.

Hi, this picture might help. This is my half eternity in 18 K palladium WG next to a silver pendant. Platinum will be heavier and all the other metal properties to be considered but coulorwise I think the alloy in my ring is very white. No plating and no change in colour over time.

"Platinum - if you don’t care for patina - PT 950/Ru or PT 900/Ir, not PT 950/Ir."

Quoting yssie above. Platinum doesn't wear away on the prong tips like gold will. I pretty much do all my jewelry in platinum when it is an option and especially if it is a daily wear piece.

If a person loves rhodium plating, have your platinum ring rhodium plated. At least when it wears away, there's white metal underneath!

I have decided to go with platinum but I’m struggling with choosing 950/Ru or 900/Ir. The jeweler I’m most likely going to be working with quoted me a $240 difference between the two. Any insight?

I think this page from Mark Morrell's website where he explains which alloy he prefers, and why, is really useful:

P.S. If you are not committed to working with your local jeweler, I'll strongly encourage you to consider Mark Morrell -- his solitaires are truly wondrous, very "fluid," beautifully finished!
Here's the warm welcome he received upon joining PS not quite 2 years ago (as PS Trade member @MWM ), so you can get an idea of why he's held in such high regard :))
