Platinum ring sizing drama - maybe? Help, please.

I think this is the right forum section for this.

I recently ordered my fiance's wedding band, from a well-respected, small jeweler. I spoke with the owner to get a price quote in December and after doing so, said I'd be giving him a call in January to place an order.

I called in January and made sure the quote was the same, and confirmed how and where to send my check. I said my fiance and I weren't sure what size he needed, that we'd tried on both 9s and 9.5s and that there was little consistency among sizers and brands. I said I'd call him back and let him know on the size, but mailed my check that day.

I wrote a brief letter and wrapped it around the check, stating what the check was for (style, metal), and also wrote explictly that I would call and inform him of the size we wanted the next day.

It didn't happen the next day because
my fiance is in med school in another state and had difficulty getting out to a jewlery counter, so I resorted to sending him a ring sizer and several sizes of rings to help him figure out what worked best. This took about a week, and we decided a 9.25 was right.

Today I called the owner and started to tell him what size we wanted and he informed me that the ring had already been made, in a 9.5. Truth be told, now that he said it was also a comfort-fit, my fiance will find a 9.25 slightly loose, let alone a 9.5.

The owner had my letter in front of him, after I insisted he pull it out, but he blamed me for not calling right away.

Regardless, he said he'd re-size and re-carve the platinum ring (it is hand-engraved around the entire circumference).

Now, my issue. I feel cheated, somehow. I feel like it's the same as if he took a ring he made as a sample and offered to cut it down to the right size. I have also read that the solder weakens that point in the ring, and that platinum is difficult to re-size. The ring is die-struck. I don't know what to do. I feel really sad over this - we spent so much time and money trying to get the correct fit, and now it's as if we shouldn't have bothered. I don't know what I should do. We are a young couple, both in professional school and without a lot of cash. I just don't know if I'm being unreasonable in my expectations, here.

Sorry for the length. Anyone?

He's wrong. Period. He shouldn't have made the ring until he heard definitively from you about the size. I don't know if sizing it will make it weaker, but if that is the case, I'd ask him to make a new ring. If not, then sizing it is fine....sorry that this happened to you!

Thank you for replying. I talked to him again and he said that the ring is resized and he can't tell at all.

He waffled on the "weakness" issue and said something about how the ring is forged initially as a long piece. I don't know what that has to do with resizing, or who to ask about this weakness thing. When I brought up having problems resizing it again down the road, he said something about how we can't predict the future. Useless.

I agreed that he would send it out...I told myself that I'm ok with this, even though in my heart of hearts I'm not. If I can tell even a tiny bit that it's been resized, I know I'll be even more upset.

I don't know how I would say "I want a new ring." He is VERY difficult to speak with on the phone; like only 75% is getting through.

! :-(
