What are your thought's on this ring? It's from a local auction, bids are currently at $700 CAD, it's a platinum and diamond setting with a 1.13 carat ruby in the centre- it's showing very purple in the picture but in real life it's a beautiful red with slight purple undertones but not to the degree it's showing in this picture. Auctioneers were told the original purchase price was $3250 USD (I think they said it was from the 50's or 60's but I can;t remember now...I looked at quite a few pieces this day). It's currently a size 4- I would need to size it up to an 8, do you think this is doable based off the setting? Honest opinions are welcomed and appreciated!

Not a jeweler, but it would probably be very expensive to size it up to an 8, although I think it’s do-able. What is the clarity and carat weight of the diamonds? For that price, don’t expect an untreated ruby. It will probably look very dark in real life. I would call it a purple sapphire to be honest.

Yes, resizing up 4 full sizes will be quite expensive.
The ring is lovely. Does the ring come with a guarantee it’s a natural ruby and not a synthetic? Agreed that you don’t know what treatment the ruby has had and without proper confirmation I’d be inclined to pay not much more than what the ring mount and diamonds are worth. I buy pre loved at auction and on eBay frequently. Assuming 1.5 carat of diamonds (is it 14, 18 or platinum ?) I’d pay $1,300 US for it. Platinum $1,500. Remember to include the buyers premium and resizing cost into your cost calculation.

It did not come with any guarantees it's a natural ruby, I ended up letting the ring pass, the winning bid was $750 CAD which I believe is a steal even if the ruby is treated but I did bid and win on a georgian era rose cut diamond pendant!

Good to know, thanks T L. I have had small rings sized up this much prior and it's usually in between $100-$300 depending on the goldsmith and labour but I decided to pass on this ring. It was a beautiful ring when I saw it in person but didn't want to risk not being able to size it up. I won a rose cut diamond georgian era pendant instead which I'm very happy with!
