Here''s my saga...I''m getting married one week from today in a private beach ceremony, but then following it up the next day with a catered event at my parents oceanside home. When we started planning this thing 4 months ago, we heard rave reviews about a certain caterer. We met with the company, felt it would be a good fit (60 person lobsterbake with tons of extras), and gave the caterer''s a $1000 deposit. Since then, we were "assigned" one of their coordinators- who has only been there for 5 months and was a complete idiot when we met with her. So, I called the owner of the company, gently explained that were weren''t exactly satisfied with our coordinator, to which he thanked me for being honest and assured me that we would only be dealing with him from that point on.

Great. My fiance and parents met with him 3 1/2 weeks ago, and we were impressed with his ideas and proposed menu. He left that night promising he would get back to us asap with the answers to our questions, as well as contract (though he did quote us an estimate of approx. $250/pp....no, that is not a typo, ugh).

Fast forward 3 weeks- 5 voice messages left for him, 2 emails...nothing, no response, nada. They have no idea our final numbers of people, the number of tables, etc. Nor have we finalized a menu or got a contract.

Feeling utterly frustrated, my fiance showed up unannounced at his office/kitchen last Friday. He assured him everything was on track, he''s been really busy, he''ll talk to us soon, we''ll have a contract by Friday (today) blah blah blah. Yesterday, the "fired" coordinator calls my parents home and my poor mother almost dropped dead to realize it was her. My mother expressed her frustration with the lack of contact we''ve had with the owner, as well as wanting to know some answers to our logisitical questions. Of course, the woman had no clue, but said she would check with and call her back today.

This catering company is ruining my day. We are all worried and stressed out beyond belief, and I feel like now we have no choice but to kiss this guys butt or else he''s going to spit in our food or something equally as disturbing.

So, this is our tentative plan (which is why I need some advice): when the idiot woman calls today, my mother is going to demand to speak to the owner. If he comes to the phone, she''s going to lay out the issues (including the needed contract).
If he is somehow unavailable, my father and fiance are going to his office/kitchen bright and early tomorrow morning to calmly (hopefully) work things out.

We''re paying this guy a lot of money- is this a typical catering dilemna? I don''t know, maybe they don''t work or finalize things until the week before the wedding...all I know is I''m at my wits end. We should have just eloped and called it a day.

I''m so sorry you''re dealing with this. I''ve heard lots of stories similar to this. In general, I do think they end up with stuff being OK (it gets worked out at the last minute), but honestly, who needs the extra stress?!?!!

I think one thing that might help your case is if they continue to be unsatisfactory threaten to go to the BBB - businesses really tend to respond to that kind of threat. If not, you can escalate to a lawyer and/or start looking for alternative catering companies - you might want to find one or two other options anyway just so you know you have something to fall back on and aren''t so stressed.

In any case, I''m so sorry this is happening to you - no bride needs this kind of stress!!

oh no, I can''t believe how unprofessional they are being. They both sound completely inept. I don''t care how busy you are, this is not a way to treat clients...I would honestly have them put everything in writing and have them sign something which holds them liable...

Have you ever used them before or know any one that has? I hope everything works out, this is the last thing you and your family should be worried about-

i feel for you~!

thanks Ivana and AG-

This company actually has a pretty good reputation in our area, believe in our not...though not for long...

the BBB was a good idea, I''m going to look into it.
