I’ve been looking for engagement rings and found two HRD 5ct stones. One is out of package and one is on inside. The store refused to take the one in the package out if we don’t deposit. So, please help me look for an ideal cut stone from this information.

Stone 1 : HRD 5.03ct H VS2 3EX Nil
Clarity (1 Crystal near the edge on the surface)
Measurements 10.90-10.96mm x 6.77mm
Girdle: Medium 3.5% faceted
Total depth 61.8%
Total width 58%
Crown Height 15.5% (36.4 deg)
Pavilion Depth 43% (40.7 deg)
Length Halves Crown 50%
Length Halves Pavilion 75%
Sum 77.1 deg

Stone 2 : HRD 5.02ct H VS1 3EX Nil
Clarity ( 2 Clouds on the table)
Measurements 11.02-11.10mm x 6.75mm
Girdle: Medium 4.0% faceted
Total depth 61.0%
Total width 59%
Crown Height 13% (32.1 deg)
Pavilion Depth 44.5% (41.6 deg)
Length Halves Crown 50%
Length Halves Pavilion 80%
Sum 73.7 deg

Please help looking at this proportion whether it is a ideal cut stone.

Thank you in advance :)

Just based on the proportions and angles, I'd be inclined to lean towards #1, but I would need assurance for both with advanced images, especially at this carat weight and price realm.

I don't consider either of these ideal cut stones. Granted your options are limited when you get in to such a large size, but 36.4 is VERY steep (stone 1), and 40.7 is too steep to combine well with 36.4

See this chart for proportions: https://www.pricescope.com/education/diamond-cut/diamond-proportions

The "safest" proportions are in the green column, and the 2 columns next to the green (yellow and orange) are the 2nd "safest" and can yield gorgeous stones. Anything outside of those 3 columns and you need to be more careful and get advanced images. It doesn't mean that all stones outside of those ranges are "bad", but they are significantly less safe.

I'm still stuck on...the store refuses to take it out of the package without a deposit?! Is there somewhere else you can shop? Seriously.

In many markets (with low trust) sealed packets are the norm.
It is not fair to judge a retailer by the requirements of the dealers supplying their merchandise MWA as the diamonds may well be on approval or consignment.
And in addition, these are used in some countries as an investment tool 'proof' that the stone can be resold as is.

Wow @Garry H (Cut Nut), very interesting! I'm not sure that I was judging the retailer so much as the idea of buying a diamond that could only be viewed through plastic.

I would encourage the OP to find a place to shop for a 5 carat diamond at a store where it can be looked at and tried on, even it means traveling to a different part of the country or to another one for that matter. I know diamonds are expensive the world over. Surely someone who is going to spend 50K-300K on a diamond might be well advised to travel to a higher trust area to procure one, if that's what it takes.

@paulineK can I ask where you are shopping? Is online buying an option?

I did a Pricescope search for you. There are several very well proportioned stones in the 5-6 ct range. If you buy an ACA you could be confident enough in it's cut quality to buy it sight unseen.

Thank you for all comments and suggestions @DejaWiz @lovedogs @Garry H (Cut Nut) @Tourmaline @mwilliamanderson

After reading all, I think I should keep looking for other stones rather than these two.

@mwilliamanderson I wish I could purchase diamonds in the U.S.. unfortunately, I live in the continent very far from you (South east Asia). Online shopping is also my option but I dont know if it is possible to receive diamonds from abroad without paying custom duty. If you know more information please suggest. Furthermore, if you find some interesting stones, it would be grateful to send to me. Or you can suggest a place to shop near here, i might try to visit.

In my country, people do not pay that much intention on the proportion or lighting performance of the diamonds. Maybe that’s why shops randomly import the stones in any proportion with 3EX certificate which most people think they are the same in every stones.

@paulineK My best advice would be to educate yourself regarding cut proportions and use that information when requesting what stones to bring in. It sounds like you are well on your way since you know that GIAXXX and AGS000 is not enough.

I think you will find it helpful to read or reread the article on proportions: https://www.pricescope.com/education/diamond-cut/diamond-proportions

Beyond that, you will have to rely on your own eyes to judge your color and clarity preferences and to spot any symmetry issues. Looking at a lot of really well cut diamonds such as the branded diamonds at Whiteflash, Brian Gavin Diamonds and Victor Canera, will help get your eyes used to what to look for.

Good luck, and please let us know what you end up buying!

@paulineK i wonder if it is feasible for you to travel somewhere to buy a stone? If you’re in SE Asia then I think HK is probably the closest big diamond hub.
