Picked up my setting today. After I got it home I really looked at it and I don''t love it at all! I looks way different to me than the wax mold. How should I approach this with the jeweler? I tried taking some pics and will post them, but I can''t get a good close up with my Drebel. Specifically, in the split shank the "spaces" are much too large. I didn''t want this much space! Also, each space looks almost like an equilateral triangle. I wanted the each shank to "swoop up" more. What am I supposed to do? I feel so down right now. I mean, this was my design, I saw the wax and it just looks soooo different. I LOVE the 3 sided pave, but this ring is too "boxy" for my liking. Am I screwed? I don''t want to be unfair to the jeweler. Please any advice would be great as I am mildly freaking out. TIA!

Hmmm, i like the ring, but can see where you would feel it is boxy. It does have a very angular look to it. I get the feeling that it shows quite a bit of skin, and that might bother me. But, I do think you should give it a day or two so that you can get used to it....to give your minds eye a chance to 'merge' the reality with your expectations and to see the similarities as opposed to the differences. After a day or two of wear, of it still bothers you, take it back and see what they think can be done.

Jen,
I decided to call the jeweler. I am going to go back in today and we''ll discuss it. I just don''t like it. Yes, too much skin shows through. I honestly don''t know what will be able to be done about this. I guess I will find out.

I see what you are talking about... I wonder if you could take a pic of your entire hand so we could get the "entire" picture?

Others here on the board have had some custom work done and most of the jewelers were willing to work with them to make some corrections. I would just let them know that the finished project is just not exactly what you wanted and go from there. I bet something could be done with the "triangles" on the sides at least.

Do you have any pics of the wax?

Good luck, I see exactly what you are saying, it has too big of an openning IMHO. I hope he makes it right for you, I know how dissapointing this is for you, hugs!!!

Here''s the link to the pics of her wax molds

It looks pretty obvious that that ring was somewhat a "custom" design. You saw the wax and said "okay", but the finished ring can still be quite a surprise. I wish it was a better surprise for you. One of the most difficult things for non-artistic types, such as myself, is to judge the potential beauty of a design until it is truly finished. I just know not to trust my judgment in these things. Unfortunately, jewelers making custom items for the public must face the reality that their designs may not be super looking ones and that a less than perfect artistitic type of person may well approve the wax and then be dissappointed later on when the ring is done. It happens way too often.

One of the main reasons to buy a "designer" ring, is that you can see finished examples before your diamond is set and still make a very good judgment of appearance. You can basically count on the good taste of most jewelry "designers", too. If they fail to please,m they are quickly out of the business. Good ones have some staying power. It is a safety zone for most people.

I sure hope things work out better for you in the next round.

The angles are different, but as far as I can tell, the hole is just as big in the wax as it is in teh finished ring.

David & Steve--this is exactly right! Def. not the fault of the jeweler. I guess I just don''t know what to do as I don''t exactly have tons of cash sitting around. This ring and diamond were major purchases for us. It''s strange b/c when I saw the wax I really liked it. Then, I got the ring and YUCK! I wish I just would have found a setting that I liked, but I had a very difficult time with that. I''ll post later on about what I find out from the jeweler. Thanks everyone for your support!

Yeah, the hole look about the same size, but I think the esthetic of the wax looks ''softer'' than the finished product. It could be because the wax has smooth and slightly rounded edges to everything, whereas the finished product has the milgraining on the edges. The milgraining seems to give it a much more angular crisp look, maybe adding to the overall effect of ''boxy'' which was one of amytudes comments.

It looks to me as though the only way to substantively change the design is a total re-make.

But here's an idea- what about simply setting some diamonds into the spaces? Looks like trilliants might fit.

I do feel very bad to see someone wait for something and not be pleased with the final result. I'm sure the person who made and sold this to you feels bad too- it is going to cost some money to make it right- a big question is going to be "who's responsibility is that?"

Did you buy the center diamond from the person who made the ring? If so you wil have more "pull" in my opinion.

Quite honestly- I try to only design basic rings with not a lot of unusual details because they find a broader audience.
I think my attitude is not all that uncommon among manufacturers- but this does make it harder for folks who want something out of the norm.

Best of luck!!!!!

Oh just wanted to add that I know the "holes" in the wax & ring are the same size. I''m not trying to say the jeweler made them somehow bigger in the ring...lol. I was just saying that the when I looked at the wax and then the finished product they look different to my untrained eye. That''s all...maybe somehow the holes looked smaller to me when it was just a wax mold.

Or blue sapphires.
That was my first thought that those spaces were begging to be filled with something blue :}

2 immediate reactions

1- the stone looks too small for the mounting--its overwhelmed by the thickness of the shank and the Y's
2-the triangular spaces look like blind eyes as though something fell out of them..........however i wouldnt fill them with stones....your head needs to be bigger

1 possible remedy that would be the least costly is to make the prongs thicker: bigger and bolder to help compete with the strength of the mounting and PAVE them TO GIVE THEM MORE SUBSTANCE --they disappear next to the Y's and make the stone and head recede against the Y's

the holes in the finished product look as if stones were supposed to go there but they got left out or something.

however, the wax does look very different, partially maybe because wax is literally that, WAX and more flexible, whereas when you are packing diamonds into metal it may be harder to create that super soft looking curve for the shoulders?? i don't know, maybe an expert can chime in on that...

i do see the curve in that sideways pic of the finished product, so there is an angle there of how the shoulders come up to the ring, maybe just not as pronounced as you thought.

hard to say!! unfortunate you don't like it...i will say that our ring was custom and when i got it, i didn't LOVE LOVE LOVE it at first because it was wider than i wanted (wanted 2.5mm max and it was 2.9mm..a big difference to the eyes), it also had more metal than i wanted, it was really beautiful but not 100% what i thought it would be. but hey it was custom and i had to live with it, i never saw a wax, just a similar ring and we made some changes to it.

well ff 3 years later after the engagement, i had a new stone put in my ring recently and also had WF thin out the edges of the original e-ring a bit so it's a tad thinner and less metal, love it much more now....

so one thought is if you cannot reach an agreement with the jeweler on how to fix it so you adore it asap...wait and see if it grows on you and if not, in a few years maybe have it redone or have a few elements fixed. good luck!

You guys are great--just back in from the jeweler....and....doing a total remake. It''s gonna cost me another $900, but I realize that this was not his fault. He mentioned doing the trillions and gave me an idea of what it would look like and I didn''t care for the brilliant trillion next to my step cut emerald.

Anyway, I think Steve has summarized what I felt--I wanted more "graceful" curves and yet I love the look of pave. I''m gonna sacrifice the curves for the pave. No more split shank--I''m just going to do a rather simple 3 sided pave. I''ll try to find a pic of a similar setting and post it here. I picked out the head/basket/crown I liked and we''re going to do a little bit of pave on the prongs, too.

Whew--I feel so silly getting so upset about this. It''s just a ring, after all, and there are starving children in this world (as my mom used to tell me when I wouldn''t eat my veggies). I guess with a ring like this you have so many emotions tied to it. Esp. since my other was stolen and this is its replacement. I really do appreciate all your support--it is nice having a place like this to come to.

I am glad to hear there is a resolution already

Will the new ring look anything like THIS ?

I''m glad you are going to get it changed to suit you more. The $900 will be money well spent!

Valeria(ana),
Yes, kind of like that...here''s a pic of what it would look like from the side. Obviously the head will be different cuz mine is an EC. Pave a little more than 1/2 way around the band. The head will have some pave work as well. I think it''s around 1 ct pave or so. Head will rest higher than in this pic. Also not sure on the width of the band itself, but it will be wider in the back and taper slightly in the front (I keep thinking the thickest part was around 2.5 or 2.8mm, but I''m not sure).

It looks like a man made it. It does not look good to me. I do this work all the time too - I would rather have a happy recommending refferring client than a p.....d off ex customer.
I would never have let you have it, then I would have offered to remake it.

$900 for a total remake? That doesn''t sound too bad. Good luck. Hope it turns out better this time.

Sorry your wait was for your new ring was so disappointing.I hope you will be happy with the remake. You must be happy with the price to remake the ring. it sounds like a fair price.Looking forward to seeing your new ring.

Thanks--I guess this setting is just a cathedral setting. The prongs will be double claw and the head and prongs will have some pave. A little like this one I found here on PS. The sides you see from this angle (on the basket) will have the pave. On the other (longer) sides, there will be a little scrollwork on the basket.

I hope you are happy with the remake. It is interesting that, from the link to the original post of the wax mold, so many people loved it too. You were not the only one.

It is evident that one cannot tell, unless you see a finished design, how a ring will actually turn out. I hope this time it will turn out great because the center stone looks beautiful and you should wind up with something you will love forever. Best of luck.

I''ve been there, Amytude. Picked up the custom-made ring setting for my emerald cut and knew in my gut that something just wasn''t right. Again, it wasn''t the jewelers fault (this was a remake of the first version which was his fault); the design just didn''t work for me. I''m so glad you are going to get it remade and that you are going with a different design altogether. It sounds like it will be just lovely. How long did the jeweler say it would take? How did the jeweler respond when you told him/her that you weren''t thrilled with the results? Well, cheers to your new ring and I can''t wait to see pictures!!

I hope the remake is everything you want it to be. I definitely understand how this feels. It''s quite unnerving that although you may think the wax seems okay, it really can be quite different from the finished product. I think this is where jewelers who can make and show you CAD/CAM images would really help, because those images are so much closer to what the finished product will look like than the wax is.

The new design you''ve shown us seems very elegant and pretty...I hope it turns out well! Keep us posted.
