Hi all,

I've been looking for a diamond for a solitaire white gold engagement ring for a few weeks now and after doing a little research here, I narrowed it down to the GIAXXX below, but I am concerned about it scoring “very good” on the HCA tool for light return rather than “excellent”. The overall HCA score is 1.4. Also, will the strong fluorescence influence how sparkly it is? Any help would be appreciated!

The specs are:
Carat Weight 0.74 carat
Color Grade J
Clarity Grade VVS2
Cut Grade Excellent
Polish Excellent
Symmetry Excellent
Fluorescence Strong Blue
Clarity Characteristics Cloud, Pinpoint
Table 58%
Depth 61.8%
Crown angle 35.5
Pavilion angle 40.6

HCA Score: 1.4 - Excellent - within TIC range
Light Return: Very Good
Fire: Excellent
Scintillation: Excellent
Spread: Very Good

I really like that original stone! It's my favorite of the choices listed so far.

The .71 looks nice, too.

The .7 has some odd clarity going on near the 2:00, 6:00, and 11:00 zones

Thank you! I am a bit afraid of the K looking too warm in the white gold setting... Is there a noticeable difference between J and K? I also found this I colour which is smaller, but has no fluorescence and scores 1.3 on HCA. Would that be a better choice than the J diamond?

As you go lower in color, the color range is broader (i.e. the difference between a "low" K and a "high" K could be quite noticeable), so there could be a clear difference between J and K.

I do like the I color a lot, probably more than the original J!

The photos of the original 0.74 J make it look more yellow/brown tinted than the stone actually is. THe white balance is off on the camera. You'll notice it if you compare it to the 0.61 and cover the diamonds. The background is more yellow/brown tinted on the imaging of the 0.74. So, I'm pretty sure the J actually looks much "whiter" in hand

Thank you! Do you think that the strong fluorescence is fine? I read that blue fluorescence can help lower coloured stones face more white, but can sometimes cause milkiness, which I would like to avoid.

Honestly, I'm not too well-versed in fluorescence. It doesn't look milky in the video, but I'm not sure what the lighting is like. I have a feeling that @DejaWiz knows more about that

It may or may not. The only way to make the determination is to expose it to UV light to see if it goes cloudy/milky/hazy. If the seller has this diamond on-hand, then inquire about having their gemologist vet it to assess the fluorescence.
