Hello and Happy New Year. After reading several threads on PS, I have resolved to purchase my "upgrade" gem first instead of several small purchases throughout the year. To this end I am looking at a cushion cut blue sapphire. The sapphire is approximately 2 carats and 5.5 x 7.7mm. It is described as a medium toned blue with no modifiers, even coloration, eyeclean and intense saturation. The sapphire is heat treated but lacks a gem report at this time. Enclosed are a daylight photo and an indoor photo. If I decide to proceed should I make the purchase contingent on a GIA or AGL brief? I had thought I saw this sapphire mentioned on a previous PS thread but I went back a year and could not find mention of it.

I am also looking at an unheated sapphire with a gem brief and a comparable price. It has a slight violet modifier and is slightly less saturation than the pictured gem. The unheated sapphire has a color shift from blue to a more blue violet in daylight versus indoor conditions. I would be very happy with either sapphire but wondered if I should choose the unheated sapphire. I always read of PSers recommending unheated gems. What are the advantages of an unheated sapphire versus a heat treated sapphire? ( On a side note, it is amazing how much darker the photos appear on my computer versus my phone.) I am hesitant to post a photo of the other gem since I do not have it "on hold" yet.
On an unrelated topic, could we have a thread on what constitutes a "precision" cut on a gemstone? I, for one, would love to learn what to look for in a quality cut.
Thank you for your guidance, opinions and advice in making this decision.

This is an uneducated opinion but here we go anyway. Something about the cut bothers me. Maybe it’s just me but it looks super wonky. And I also don’t like how part of it blacks out. Again, that’s just me and I could be objectively wrong.

.

Such a nice blue !

... 'guess this is why they heat 'them - so would I

The sapphire looks very pretty from your pictures. How does it look under your home lights, which is most often times the worst case scenario? I would decide based on which appealed to me most, rather than treatment status, as long as it isn't diffused and I'm not looking for a diffused sapphire.

Advantages of unheated vs heated? None really, other than mind-clean preference and pocketbook allowance. I've seen excellent non-precision cut and horrible precision cut gemstones. I've also seen jaw dropping precision cut and terrible precision cut gemstones.

My definition of precision cutting (not my website as I'm not a lapidary nor in the trade):

From your pictures it does look a bit dark to me in places. Can you post more pics maybe with different backgrounds?
I would definitely want either an AGL or GIA report. Heated vs. unheated is personal preference and budget, heating enhances color, but unheated are very rare.
