Hi everyone!

I am hoping that you can give me some pointers as to which shape I should choose for my blue sapphire halo ring. I am torn between pear and oval shape D:...

Some background about me: I am in my late 20s and I want to make a blue sapphire ring since that's my husband's birthstone and September is also our wedding anniversary month. I wear my ering most of the time but I am hoping that I can get this ring and rotate between wearing the ering and this blue sapphire ring.

At first I was very determined to get the pear since the shape is more unique and none of my friends/family have pear shape gemstone jewelry. But when I saw the oval with slightly bigger diamond halo, I was very drawn to it as well. It was super blingy and the contrast/bling from the bigger diamond and the deep blue sapphire is to die for:)!

My jeweler thinks the pear shape is more playful and may be more suitable for my age. He thinks I can get the ovals later on when I get my birthstone ring (ruby ). He also thinks the pear halo seems like it could be worn everyday, whereas the slightly bigger diamond on the oval may make the ring feel a bit formal (so not really an everyday ring).

I would like to get your opinion on this.

Which one would you choose?
Pear blue sapphire or oval blue sapphire?

If it was me, I'd forget about age and formality differences because I really don't think those exist between an oval and pear shape etc. I am not sure why anyone would think they do.

I like the pear better. I can't really say why; it just appeals to me more. But I'd just go with whichever appeals to you more, period.

Love the look of the pear, it’s more unusual and such an elegant shape.

I think you will get used to the larger blingy diamonds very quickly. :) If you love the pear, you can get a ring made with a larger diamond halo and get the best of both worlds.

Another vote for pear!

Plus, your jeweler likely said what he did because he knows it will be much easier to find an oval ruby than a pear shaped one. ;-)

If the stone wasn't blue I would have voted oval, but due to the Diana ring popularity, I would go for the pear. Both are nice though!

Am I reading correctly? The top one does not look very blue at all. =)2

I think the top ring (not the stone shape) looks great on your youthful hand and with your mani. I think it's overall a better look than the lower ring. That ring looks very generic to me -- wanna-be Princess Di ring except a small sapphire. Not trying to be mean.

Split the difference and get a pad sapphire.

Harder to find a decent sapphire in a pear, heart, etc. I think it would be almost impossible for a pad.

Pear is so pretty!

of the 2 i like the pear. its beautiful! would be so unique and striking in a rich blue. although, its very soft and feminine pretty as is in the image.

From your comments, it seems like you are factoring in not only shape but size of the diamonds (i.e. you talk about the diamond size making a difference in bling, every day, etc.).

Does that mean you are picking the setting first and then the stone? Or does your jeweler already have a blue sapphire to fit the setting? If so, can you compare stones?

The quality of the stone would be my first consideration over the setting. I buy the best blue sapphire for my budget and preferences (size, color, cut and then shape) first. Then pick the setting for that stone to fit my needs.

This. When it comes to colored stones, if you want to have a fabulous ring, always pick the better colored stone gem, and prioritize the color over what shape or setting it's in.

I think it comes down to what you want.

I have a pear sapphire in a diamond halo and I love it so I am probably biased. I think pear shapes (here in Australia at least) are still not that common so I get a lot of comments on it. Either are lovely though

Haha those two pictures are not my hand nor the rings I’m looking to buy. They were just stock photos I found online that resemble the pear or oval halo design that I want. I am getting a blue sapphire.

My jeweler is sourcing blue sapphire in both pear and oval shape for me right now. Color is important of course but the shape is very important to me as well. I’m in no hurry to get the ring so I would rather wait till I find the perfect stone that meets both color and shape than to settle for one that only meets one.

I would pick whatever shape your favorite stone comes in. Look at some in both shapes and buy whichever one speaks to you. I don't buy any of the stuff about age or formality. It will probably be easier to find an oval that appeals to you because there are more of them out there.

The length to width ratio of a sapphire pear will greatly impact the look of the finished ring. Some people like chubby pears, others like longer pears, it's all down to personal preference. To make things easier you might want to sort out what L/W you prefer at the beginning of your search.

Let me also say that blue sapphire pears can tend to get very dark towards the point, sometimes the top third of the stone can be almost black. This tendency decreases as the pears get chubbier, and start to look more like a round.

If you're really torn, an idea might be to purchase lab grown or fashion sapphire ring in one or both styles, wear it for a while to see how you like it?

Otherwise, I would go for the pear, because it sounds like you like it and as already mentioned, it's easier to get a ruby in an oval later.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I’ve decided to go with pear shape as it was love at first sight and is definitely a more unique style out of the two. I am still waiting for my jeweler to get back to me on the stone but I will definitely share once the ring is made!
