My friend is going to sell his grandmother's 4.5mm/4.6mm 18k studs to a mutual friend. He has no idea how to price them and I'm a novice with emeralds. I find it all so confusing. I don't want to be 'that' poster who asks for people to put a value on a piece through pictures alone, but... please give me a ballpark figure. Are we talking 10-50, or more like 100-200? I've attached photos. A dozen of them.

One is more shallow and windowed, the other has some opaque vein (?) inclusions, but both are a beautiful bright green, no yellow, a barely there hint of blue in some lights but mainly a bright glowy straight up green. The most accurate color is against the gin bottle.

They asked me to price them knowing I'm a jewellery addict, and I don't want to get it wrong... oh the pressure! It Thanks for any and all opinions.

Well, we don't know what level of treatment the emeralds may have - with the range being none, or standard oiling at the least, to more invasive/less stable enhancement treatments - and the value of the emeralds could vary wildly depending on treatment alone. Add in cut and color, well, you already are aware of the problem of assessing a reasonable resale price, besides the whole "based on photos" assessment factor!

However, FWIW,if the emerald earrings were mine, and considering the size of the stones and the 18kt gold findings, and checking comparatives at Africa Gems ($219 for a 4.5mm round at the lowest Grade A), I'd sell the pair to a friend for maybe $200-250.

I agree with @marymm

I do recommend (usually) sending stones to AGL. However 2 things here; a gem brief is 65 dollars (I think, its been a while since I sent stones off) But as these stones are set, it might be more than this...plus I honestly can't recall if they can evaluate if a stone is treated when its set or not (anyone know for sure???)

IMO, they are too small and too included to bother with an origin report.

Because of the 18K findings, it might just be worth it to find out at a low level how much treatment is in the stones. An appraiser who deals with colored gemstones (in particular emeralds), with some decent equipment should be able to do this. I would not expect a super high $ appraisal evaluation (if you get one, run!) The level of treatment, color, vibrancy will usually define how much they will be worth.

@marymm and @Arcadian
thanks everyone, I'm glad I asked! I would have lowballed it. But now that I've taken your advice and priced similarly colored loose rounds (genius that I am, I was only searching for earrings), I'll suggest they wait until September when I can get a professional opinion, but that it'll probably be in the 100s. ALL my gem people, from dealers and jewellers down to pawn guys, are on their month-long vacations already. This town shuts down for August. Thanks!

Africa Gems has calibrated round emeralds in five different grades for sale on their website.

You can get the 4.5 mm price for each grade and see that quality makes a huge difference. Also note these are full, high retail prices and I would expect the wholesale price to be 50% or less.
