Please show me your 8.5-ish solitaire

I'm planning to surprise someone for Christmas. Her size is an 8.5 and I'm trying to figure out what would be an appropriate band size for her solitaire.

I think your pictures would help me have a better idea. If you can, please include the carat as well.

Also, any suggestions on how thick the band (platinum) should be would be appreciated!

Well really any ring. The "is this too big thread" got me thinking about how much perspective matters with finger size.

Finger coverage really varies so much depending on the wearer. I have fallen into the trap of oh that looks great only to realize the model was a 4 or 5 and on my 7+ (8 for some) hand the rings looks dinky.

Makes me think of Chris Farley fat man in a little jacket.

It is a great help when I see threads with finger size and mms, so let's share.

Not set but 15 x 10.7 on my 7 sized paw.

Today I was just wondering to myself what would different ct size diamond look like on my size 8 (!) finger. I think my finger is a bit big compared to PS's average ring size. If there are any ladies here that have size 8 ring finger like me, do you mind posting some modeling pics of your engagement rings for me to drool over please?

P.S: I would love to try some on in a jewelry store, but I don't want my boyfriend to think I'm crazy!

I wear ring size 8.5 - 9 on my right hand, and I would always want at least a 2mm band. If the center stone was larger than, say, 7mm, than I might prefer a 2.5-3mm band, perhaps tapered. Any band I get has to be comfort fit.

However, this ring has a 8.16mm center stone, and I wanted a wider band -- this is 5mm wide, ring size 9

I've gone through them and all the suggested posts within them, etc. But seldom seen the band width/thickness mentioned. I wonder if there's a way to maybe eyeball it, or it's all relative?

Would it be helpful to try a simulator - something like this? You can put in the diamond size, ring size, width of the band, etc to get a general idea of appearance.

Baguette is 0.10, 2mm band




0.50 elongated radiant, band tapers, don’t know for certain, but think the wide part is between 2.5-3mm.


0.20 cushion with small bezel, 1.5 mm band.



1.00 cushion LGD with wider bezel, 2mm band.

0.50 cushion, 0.8 mm colored halo, ~2 mm colorless step cut halo, metal bezel, ~2.5 mm color side stones with bezels = ~ 3 mm, ?~3 mm bullets, 2.5 mm band. Colors are EGD, colorless are LGD. IIRC the middle square is ~10 mm. I have since reset.





0.50 marquise with bezel, 2 mm band.


~1.2 AVR (LGD), bezel, 2 mm band.



~1.00 kite on knife edge 2mm band, band below is ~3 mm.


0.95 AVR, ~0.8 Halo, ~2 mm moons, two 0.6? AVR. Can’t see the 2mm band. This is re-sized from 6.5 to 7.5, based on my other rings I would say my index is 8.5, so you can see what a little tight looks like.



I have a few salt-n-pepper rose cuts about 1.2 ct on 2mm bands, I can dig them up if need.

If I had a size 8.5 ring finger, I would want 2.5-3 mm band for a dainty look and 4 mm for a medium-wide look.

My favourite band is this 22k gold one which is 3.15mm and I find it perfect.
