We are actually in the process of moving & I'll be moving in with my bf. I know that he will want to set up at minimum surround sound, wireless & wired internet, & he has some ideas for some crazy home media solution (DVD jukebox, MP3 networking type thing) using one of the 5 laptops we have, but aren't using. I am scared for myself.

ETA: My mom does not allow us to keep anything that isn't working, so the list is actually only things we currently use. BF does not feel this way - so we will see how this list changes when we have our own place!

I'm not the gadget freak, but my husband is. There's a few other things that I can add to this list: wireless computer accesories (mouse, keyboard, headsets); blackberries; GPS systems; bluetooth earpieces; portable DVD players etc. My husband has them all. I guess it's easy to get him gifts because there's always something gadgety that he needs/wants. He also builds his own computers so we have a ton of spare soundcards, videocards, memory etc that he's upgraded to leaving drawers full of extra computer parts.

Cat 5 is used for wired networking. So instead of having a wireless netowork in your house, you can wire Cat 5 cables through the walls (like cable wires) & have jacks to plug in your ethernet cables.

Or you could always do it college apt. style & just have the wires strewn across the room on the floor.

People use it because it is a lot faster & more secure than wireless.
