If you could have any job/career what would it be? And why are/aren''t you doing that now?

I am 4 months from law school graduation and considering my options. I know what I want to do, and I know what I should do. And then there are the in between options. So...

What do y''all want to do and what are you doing? Why did you end up/stay where you are?

my dream job would be a ballerina on stage. don''t think that pays to well...

i am currently a graphic designer.

when i was in college deciding on a major, it was between art and dance-both things i love. i figured what could i do with dance? teach? and if your body goes??? plus i thought i was better at art than dance. so i pursued art. i thought of all the art concentrations and graphic design just shined above the others. i went in that direction and have been here ever since.

My dream job would be working around horses all day long, teaching lessons.

Not sure that would pay for my diamond obsession!!

Currently I'm a law student too

My dream job would be a pilot, I lost a fair amount of my hearing so I am in school to be a pyschologist. Which I think is also pretty spiffy but doesnt give the same sense of freedom.

Stretch - Ok, yes, working with horses would be my ULTIMATE dream job - but I just can''t give up decent cars, houses, vacations...my sister is going to be the one who does it as a living, I''ll just board w/ her:) What kind of horses do you have? I have a Tb gelding and a QH gelding and 2 PMU yearlings (1 perch, 1 Belgian/QH)...yeah, my sister and I have a colletion:D
How''s law school going for you?

Matatora - see THATS (being a Psychologist) my "somewhat practical/realistic dream"...I just worry that it is crazy to stay in school to become a psychologist when I finish law school instead of getting a job. Blah...

Would you want to be a psychologist or a pyschitrist? It is alot of work even in undergrad (full course load plus about 30hr/week of other requirements) but it is wonderful and their is just soo much to learn! I am getting ready to apply to grad school

so check back in a few months to see if I am still friendly.
What about being a professor? I know alot of people who just love to learn and I think this is a great feild for such people.

I was a Psych major in undergrad. Well...um, techinically I want to be a research psychologist and professor. My initial plan was to get my psych phd. Then my charming, lovely father convinced me to do both - law degree and psych degree. I am a bit burned out on school now, and everyone has convinced me to just stick with the law thing. But I REALLY WANT TO DO PSYCHOLOGY! LOL. Anyway, since my law degree is technically a doctorate, I think I could get by w/ just getting a Masters in Psych initially - especially since I am more into Social psych and jury research than anything (--> law degree is KIND OF beneficial).
Anyway, I don''t know. Part of me wants an INCOME...part of me wants to just be happy. And what''s 2 more years???

Kimber - I am just my "masters project" away from my masters is Psych.. and my original plan was to go for the phD and do the research psycho too.. but I could NEVER EVER do it. If you''re gonna do it after law school, I''d at least wait a few years. I''ve heard that law school is a nightmare.. but I also know some people who''ve done both that have said the psych phD is worse. I have contemplated going and getting my law degree, but I really don''t think I want to anymore.So.. I don''t know WHAT I want to do.

I am currently a licensed practical nurse...going back to school to get my registered nurse...anyhow I am really good at it but there has always been a hankering in the back of my mind to be a ........... jeweler. I know that jewelry is my passion and that everyone says you should always do what you have the most passion for but I live in a small town and I don''t there is enough opportunity here to warrent the career change.

Oh well.....maybe when I retire from nursing......

Thanks for your input Melissa. I just don''t know. Law school wasn''t that tiring - just BORING. I have no interest n most of it. And they idea of actualyl being a lawyer

Just not good.

I think I will apply to all of my job options, apply tograd school, apply for teaching assistantships FOR grad school...and then see what my realistic choices are.

My dream job would be a pastry chef, I am currently a graphic designer. I hope some day I can go back to school and learn to be a pastry chef and open my own little pastry shop

I had no idea that we had some horse lovers on ps! i showed Arabians for 10+ years...

I''m accountant, but I''d love to get into catering, event/wedding planning, or diamond/jewlery desgn sales for WF (I''m in Houston and think it would so FUN!).

Yay! More horse lovers! I''ve got two... some days I wonder what insanity possessed me to keep the younger one (he''s four and just barely broke to saddle... oh WOW is he a challenge). His mother I''ve owned for 9 years...

I''m currently in genetic research (taking a break after my BS) and wondering where I want to go from here. I''ve been thinking about law school and going into something related to intellectual property or medical ethics, but it''s a lot of money, a lot of time, and I wonder if I''ll have to have a Master''s degree as well to be taken seriously. Wah!

Great topic!!

I am currently doing one of my passions, I am a jeweler! I work for a wonderful store and a great owner/boss. We are currently working on opening a new store next month not too far away from me and I will be joining the staff there when it opens.

BUT.....if I could do ANYTHING, geez, I don''t even know where to begin. I think first and foremost I would be a paid traveling writer. So I would write those travel guides you see in bookstores. I''d spend months in exotic locations like Thailand and Russia and Australia, all of Europe, etc. and then write and write and write (and party!)

This one is corny, but I wish sometimes I was this huge rockstar chick! I would have this amazing voice and sell out concerts to arenas of 25,000! Like I said, corny

I love love love to dance, it''s one of the few things that I KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am good at! I wish I could be part of a dance company in New York City or somewhere amazing and be a backup dancer or something. But I''m getting old (ok, I''m only going on 26 but I''m not in my 18 year old shape anymore!) and I''m short and curvy, so I don''t know If I have the "body type" they usually have.

So there are my "dreams"! You all sound so intellignent and accomplished, I''m totally jealous!!!

This IS a good topic. I have had so many jobs, I wouldn''t even know where to begin !

I left college when I got my green-card and moved to the U.S. and started working - have been working since. Have recently toyed with going back to school to finish but I''m not sure I''m entirely motivated enough yet and I only want to do it if I know I''m going to stick it out and finish.

Right now I''m an (I hate this title, so stupid!) ''executive secretary'' to a director in a state agency. It''s good money and great health benefits etc. but unfortunately I don''t feel challenged in my job - it''s a lot of ''stuff'' but I''ve got it down to a science, there isn''t a lot of variation in the day-to-day. On the up side I work with some really great people and I''m sticking it out until we decide about moving (about another two years we think).

My ''DREAM'' job is actually something I have talked about making a reality for years now. I''d like to do event planning (weddings yes, but not just weddings, business meetings/golf - retirement trips etc. etc.) for people from here who want to have their event in Ireland. A trans-Atlantic thing. I have a great advantage (I''m from there !) and with one sister a professional florist and one a professional pastry chef with a chef hubby, a lot of things are covered already. I have lots of other ''connections'' too - it''s all a matter of putting in the effort to bring all the elements together somehow. I wish I were more motivated (this is the biggest downside from my job, I have become too complacent) , I really think I''d love this and would get huge personal satisfaction out of it.
I''d love to set it up as web-based primarily (like PS!) so I could work from wherever I am. That way it would also mean being able to go home and work there and that would facilitate another of my dreams, being able to bring my children (which we''ll hopefully have one day) to spend extended time with grand-parents, aunts and cousins.

my other dream is to be a really good Mum one day ........ that''s a job right ?!?!

Stay at home mommy

.

But unfortunately we haven''t won the lottery yet so I''m gonna be an M.D.

Wow this is a really interesting thread. I''m still not sure what I want to do, but right now I''m getting a PhD in Immunology/Virology and doing research on HIV, which is cool because its very rewarding (not to mention they pay you to go to grad school, which is a nice bonus).

I might be a researcher, but I''m not sure I could do that indefinitely. I had another major in college which was Public Policy, so I might someday go into science policy someday...

In a way its nice to feel like I have a lot of options, but it can also feel overwhelming sometimes. Right now, I''m just focusing on the four (whimper) years left in my PhD program...

Currently a nurse, in school to be a nurse practitioner.

Some days I feel I shoudl have been a vet, but I know I''m not surgically skilled....

Currently doing Marketing (BS in Marketing) just started part time classes last night to become a registered nurse.
It''s always something I wanted to do so I thought, hey...do it now while you still can...don''t want regrets later in life!

I would LOVE to be an event planner. I love throwing parties!

Would love to be an actress, it''s so much fun, but it''s so expensive to get started...and then of course you have to get lucky

I did it for awhile when I lived in LA, I also taught yoga for a little while, and am getting back into that now. In the mean time I am BROKE, all I do is volunteer at yoga studios, but I figure that after I go through yoga school again that at least I will have some connections at the studios. Same problem as with dancing though, if I injure myself I will be majorly screwed, and getting older I don''t think will be as much of a problem, I''ve had some teachers that were in their 60s and looked so young still, but I do think it''s for the younger set.
