Possible redesign for marquise sapphire ring

I recieved this ring from my grandparents the year I graduated HS and turned 18 (Can't remember which occassion it was given). I love the ring because I'm sentimental for gifts and love my birthstone. But I find the setting very boring and original. The sapphires are so dark they don't sparkle much. That's fine with me, but together with the plain setting makes the ring kind of blah. Also the tips of the marquises are unprotected and sometimes scratch me when im not careful.
For these reasons, I'm thinking of having it reset. I wanted something that reminded me of the orginal so I kept the stones in the same order, just made it an E/W band with a twist pattern and miligrain details.
The way I picture it, the twists of the band would create a bezel around each stone, but I'm not sure if bezels work that way. Do I need an internal bezel around stone and then let the twists hug around the bezel?
Also unsure about the part at the ends where it has to transition into the plain band, so I'm open to suggestions! What do you think? 20180630_203808.jpg
Also I'm aware I drew it as a straight line, I'm just not skilled enough to draw 3d dimesion. I'm hoping the pattern will give me finger coverage across the top of my finger only. Off to the side i traced the current setting and tried to measure the length of each stone to estimate how much coverage there will be.

:wavey: @ellebelle I like your idea that you sketched out. It immediately made me think of this gorgeous ring from another PSer awhile back, and it may help give you some ideas as well. You can also do a google image search for "east west marquise ring’ to get some more examples of how this has been done before.

Depending on the size of your marquise sapphires, they may need to be set up a little bit in their bezels at the points due to how the ring curves around your finger.

ETA: just keep in mind that if the sapphires are dark now in an exposed setting, they will likely darken even more in a bezel setting.

How funny, that design is so similar! Her thread says her stone was almost a carat and set on a size 9 finger. I don't know the excat size of my stones but they are much smaller. I'm hoping they are small enough that the bezels don't sit so high out of the band. I'm hoping for a look like this....
(But with less stones/coverage and adding the twisty part)

Is it necessary for the stone to bezeled and then have the bands twist around the bezel, like the above PS ring, or can the twists be used as the bezel?

I think the answers will depend on the design, the size of the sapphires and your ring size. A good jewelry designer should be able to help you work that out.

Do you have a bench in mind to help you make this ring?

Amy at DKJ is currently working on my E-ring so initially I thought I'd bring this project to her after. But the experience with her was alittle more difficult than expected so I'm open to others.

I got this scalloped ring secondhand on Loupe Troop. The seller said it was made by DKJ. This is rose gold with pink diamonds and I think you can see little prongs. This ring feels durable.

The rose gold ring with the empty solitaire is another ring I got secondhand from Etsy seller MRose. It is rather delicate (thinner) but pretty. Maybe you can tell the little diamonds are set into a base, not fully bezeled, and then prongs hold them in.

I don’t know how this translates to marquise shapes. DKJ did my avatar ring. I sent him the attached sketch and he played with sizes until he got a design that worked with the stones I sent. He went more with the bottom idea because the demantoids completely encircled the ruby. The French cuts and the tiny points on the green leaf bezels were his idea and I think they make it!

I love your sketch and the sapphires (what a lovely, special gift!) and I’m sure you can have the updated ring you dream of. Happy designing!

Thank you! I just felt inspired one afternoon to try to find a way to make it more wearable.
I think this project is going on the back burner for now. The e-ring has got me burnt out and its not done yet. I told my BF after it was done, I would be done with PS, but maybe I got the jewelry bug now!

That was who I was going to suggest - DK. He is in pretty high demand though so maybe just wait till your e-ring is done and take a breather, then start this as a next project. I like your idea, but it’s not easy going custom, let alone two custom projects at the same time. :eek2:

I was searching jewelry on pinterest for different project and found this little guy!

Its nice to see such a similar design in 3D. Now I'm considering if all the openings should be marquise shaped and set the the two diamonds in the outer openings with air gap around them? I like how the gaps make it more delicate. And maybe I'll go with prongs?
