Practical ring choice?

Just wondering if any ladies chose a ring more for practical reasons, than the one they really loved?

I did.

We went with a smaller stone to fit more within the society we live in, (big stones are NOT common here).

We went with a very low setting so I could get the ring under latex gloves, which I often use at work.

Our compromise was to get a more "impractical" (higher setting, bigger centre stone, melee everywhere) ring for me to wear outside work.

However, we almost decided to just go with the more blingy ring inititally, and I must admit that I sometimes wish we had.

I know, I know, you may think I''m crazy to pass up TWO rings for one, but I dunno, I may have just wanted THE ring and that''s it.

Argh, I hate second-guessing myself!

Whaddayathink?

Would you have done differently?

I have to say that the ring we chose was not based on how practical it is.

It''s a high setting so it won''t be able to fit under my latex gloves at work, so I won''t be wearing it there.

I left the diamond completely up to him and really did not have any input on what size carat to get me. The area HE lives in is very common to see 2.0-2.50 diamonds (near NYC) and where I live its probably between .75-1.50 (Philadelphia).

I just came to the conclusion that I''ll wear my band at work and thats it and I don''t really mind leaving the E-ring at home.

We haven''t picked one yet, but only one issue is being looked at for practicality. We are considering a 6 prong inside the halo because I work outdoors and wouldn''t want to risk losing the stone if a prong bent.

autumn,

are you going to wear a different ring to work while you''re engaged, but not married yet?

i thought about that, but then didn''t want to NOT wear a ring at work, as I spend so much of my time there.

also, i want people to know i''m engaged dammit!

Well, when we looked at rings, none of them were pratical, but im leaving the ring up to him completely. So i guess we shall see if he picked out something pratical. Im still in school and work at a funeral home, selling stuff, so i guess i could have whatever size stone i want...hehehe........j/k.
I know that he like two toned, so i know it will be two toned, so it matches everything i wear...guess he doesnt want it off my finger.

Yep! I think thats what I''m going to do. I want to get a REALLY REALLY thin band with just diamonds around it and thats it. I got one for 20$ just for fun and I just loved how dainty it looked on my finger. something like this:

http://www.tiffany.com/Shopping/Item.aspx?fromGrid=1&sku=GRP00307&mcat=148210&cid=287466&search_params=s+5-p+28-c+287466-r+101323351-x+-n+6-ri+-ni+0-t+

but much thinner. I''ll get it as thin as I can get, and not at Tiffany''s :)

When I do get married, I''ll just wear the thin band on my right hand on occasion

Thats super cute......

That one is a bit thick..

What is the smallest in mm that you can go? 1?

If so, I''d get a 1. And for a looooooot cheaper =]

I almost did luckynumber!

All of my SO''s married friends have somewhat smaller, solitares. So when he saw what I had picked out (nothing crazy, just a .75 round halo with pave diamonds) he thought it was waaaay too big (um, what?! lol) and too in your face (its definitely not).

I tried talking myself into a bunch of smaller, more plain rings to try to make him happy, but I just couldn''t do it. Eventually he began to understand my ring and my love for it and he really warmed up to it! He actually loves how different it is from all his friends rings.

While I would have been happy with anything my man gives me, I know I would have always secretly wished I had just gotten my favorite...so that''s what i did. Well, what I''m doing...I don''t have it yet!

I''ve given some thought to practicality. I chose a ring that is a more classic style rather than something of a trend, no halo or micropave (even thought I LOOOVE it and all the bling!). I don''t want the style of the year because when I''m still wearing that ring into my later years of life, I want something that will always be in style. Other than that- no carat or profile restrictions.

Before, I just wanted a simple 1ct solitaire. I always wanted 1 ct... because it''s consider somewhat "big" here. However, as soon as I tried a ring with pave stones in a high setting, I couldn''t go back to the classic solitaire look. The ring we got is not practical AT ALL. My bf thinks it''s too high and too big... like a baseball on my finger. He said you can see it miles away. I think he''s just exaggerating. He wanted me to get something with a lower setting and no pave... so.. it''s less $$$.

I''m a piano teacher, so it shouldn''t be a problem with this ring.

I told my bf that ... this is not about being practical, this is about something I LOVE! I don''t plan on wearing it when I''m home anyways. Won''t wear it doing any chores. I''ll just wear it when I''m out or teaching.

LOL! is there such a thing as too big when it comes to diamonds?

only too big if you can''t hold up your finger anymore!!

I saw a woman today with a wedding set, she had a yellow gold wband and an ering that was a yellow gold band, and instead of a diamond there was a piece of white gold in a diamond shape? (but flat...just from profile view). It was kind of cool (but not cool enough that I would want it instead of a diamond!)

that''s cool, but like you said, I also want a diamond.

maybe she just put on some hand cream and make the diamond look white? maybe it''s the inclusion you''re seeing???

Lucky, normally I''d say, "Do what you want, its your life!!" But, I can completely understand the reasons why you chose a more practical ring over your dream ring. I don''t think either route would have been wrong.

I''m most likely choosing a modestly sized colored stone, or possibly a modestly sized diamond as my e-ring. Definitely under 1ct. Part of the reason is because I do like a 5.5mm ballpark size on my hands; part of it is also because I work with NGO''s/non-profits and travel often, and I wouldn''t want a ring I''m a)leaving home often or b)constantly aware of because it isn''t working with my lifestyle.

A super blingy look would bring me a lot of attention that I''m not really looking for, and might make it awkward for me because the people I''m working with just aren''t used to seeing that kind of bling. People who aren''t familiar with diamonds, or live in areas where diamonds aren''t common, often think they''re more expensive than they are; a few of my mom''s friends are like this, and she gets wide-eyed stares and hand clutching on the .50 tcw cluster ring I gave her for her birthday last year.

So are you getting the blingy ring for an anniversary, or do you already have it?

haha no...it was like a flat piece of metal...

not the best quality...but...you get the idea. the ''diamond'' at the top is just a piece of metal!♠

haha.. i''ve never seen any rings like that.. lol

wow really?.....it probably gets caught on everything. very interesting..

At first I wanted to get a really practical ring. So I stopped looking at beadset and pave rings, or rings with prongs, and aimed for something fairly low set. But no matter what else I looked at, I loved the beadset look. So I got it! I went with a bezel instead of prongs, which was a nod to practicality (and I love my bezel). And in an odd nod to practicality, I went with a higher-set ring. I'm not in a profession that requires gloves, so I went with a ring that would be high enough to go with any wedding band we end up selecting. So it's practical in a different way.

Practicality was my main concern when choosing my ring. I had been drooling over a 1ct AVC that was a few thousand out of my pricerange, but then I had a bit of a reality check and went with an affordable 3/4 ct one instead. I can always upgrade later if I want to.
I also chose my setting to be practical: sturdy and low-set. Initialy I wanted a bezel too, but FI and I decided it would smother the stone a bit. I was worried that the stone would look a bit small , but when I recieved it, I found that it actually looks quite proportional on my hand, so no regrets about going smaller.
Choosing platinum over white gold was a practical decision for me, because I just don't have the patience to deal with rhodium plating (my body chemistry strips plating off quickly). More practical doesn't always mean less expensive.

I love the look of the delicate pave and sidestones on singlestone peices, but I know that worrying about the melee falling out would drive me batty - maybe I'll get a blingy RHR down the road for special occasions.

Since the first time I looked at engagement rings, I knew I didn't want one that was set high at all. I like lower settings, thankfully, since I am much too clumsy to ever be able to wear something large/high on a daily basis. I'd break it, mangle it, tear my finger off... Something bad would happen. So I was lucky that I never wanted anything less practical.

We are going with something more practical in price than what we'd both really like to have right now. But we plan to upgrade at some point - which he actually suggested! We feel like it's better to have something smaller and simpler than we want, but of good quality and a good diamond. We could spend more, but why not save some of that money for now?

At first, we decided on a practical low setting. In December I graduate and will be a nurse. Gloves, gloves gloves! Right? .... Wrong!
That is what we thought at first, but I've decided on Psychiatric nursing and there are hardly any gloves involved (though sometimes you wish there were... ) So practicality went out the window when we saw the diamond and ended up having to buy the setting at the same place to insure that they would insure it. I miss that ring... heaven only knows when I'll see it again ;( (erm, for those that don't know I've seen and taken pictures of my ring because I had to see it when he got it to ensure size ect.. but he has not proposed)

I'm late on the game on this but I'm almost 100% certain that HSN sells this exact ring, if not they sell something scary similar.

I'm having SO check right now (he's a photographer for HSN). He's pretty sure too : ) lol. But to each his(her) own.

wow.. I would love to see what the exact ring looks like. :naughty:

Slg47, I know exactly what ring you are talking about. It took me awhile to track down a picture online since I didn't know who made it, but I finally found it! It's made by Metalicious metalicious.jpg
I hope that upload works, if not- here's the link to the designer's site- http://metalicious.com/original-modern- ... p-777.html

A few other rings that are similar that caught my eye during this search are:
The "Killer Ring" killer_ring_img_assist_custom.jpg

This is from designer Alissia Melka Teichroew profile%20ring.jpg

I've seen the killer ring! When we went to austin to look at settings, the jeweler showed us someone who had custom ordered it!
