Once upon a time, I knew gold, silver and platinum are the "precious metals". That was... a long time ago. Now there seem to be three more used in fine jewelry (hence "precious") - at least.

Titanium, of course

Zirconium - for that blackvelvet finish

Palladium - some old rings might be made of it entirely

Iridium - used very seldom for wedding bands

and who has heard of Niobium jewelry just yet ?

The two rings below (link) are the first I see even in picture and it was this find that started the thread:

The choice of metal strykes me as rare and exotic - something that the usual precious metals have long since ceased to be.

What do you think of them ?

I have some niobium wire. It can be anodized in bright irridescent colors like titanium can. It''s pretty soft, so the hammered finish for the ring is probably a good idea. I''ve seen some really nice anodized niobium earrings. That''s a great use for it.
