I''m in need of some advice on whether or not to purchase a preowned Tiffany''s engagment ring. I happened across one that is perfect and a little under a year old. Its the exact ring I was looking at a month ago in the Tiffanys store, but for about 1/3 the price. My only hang up with purchasing is that it is preowned. It is being sold at very reputable diamond dealer that has nothing but a great track record.
It also comes with a Tiffanys certificate. Is it bad to buy a preowned ring, but save a ton of money and get the ring I originally wanted?
Any input would be helpful.
thanks so much

well, i don''t think anyone can answer that for you really. if both you and your gf are ok with it though, then why not?

What''s your hangup? Do you have the stats for the stone? If so, then go to a real Tiffany''s, look for similar specced stones, and decide if it really is 1/3 the price? If so, sure, why not? W/ Tiffany''s, you''re just paying fo rthe name anyways so if you can get a big discount like that, it brings it in line w/ more normal rings. It''s not like Tiffanys will replace teh diamond or setting for free if something happens to it.

If there is nothing wrong with it and its what you want, you should do it. And if its the ring you''ve been looking for and its a good price, I say go for it. You can''t beat the price, if its really 1/3 less than the store is selling it for today. Is there a story behind it? Tiffanys is all about the name, but they do have a great product with clean lines.

There''d be no question in my mind- I''d go for it!

If you are the superstitious type, maybe it will bug you. You have to be comfortable with it. Some people would love the fact that they got a deal -- it would add the the greatness of the ring. Others it would bug.

If you decide you're ok with it, get it appraised to make sure it is what they say it is, and then, if you love it, go for it!

Thanks
I''m not superstitious and it won''t bother me at all. I''m surprising the GF, so that is my concern that it might bother her that was preowned. But I also know that it will be something that she will love immediately, since its the very ring I was looking at a month ago at Tiffanys in Chicago. I was working with a high end custom Diamond dealer and explaining to him what I was after with a stone and setting. After looking at numerous options he had to offer, he brought out this Tiffany ring and I about crapped my pants since it was the same ring I was just looking at a month before. Only difference was that it was a smaller carat, but everything else was exact. I couldn''t believe it and still can''t. So it seems a little to good to be true, so that is why I''m a little hungup on buying it.
And since its a Tiffanys ring, it is engraved inside the band with all the specs and info. and he has the certification also.
Just seems to good to be true and the timing couldn''t be more perfect..... Is it a sign?

Thanks everyone

Yup, it''s a sign. Do it!

Just how much smaller is it than the one she loved in the store?

i know you said that the inside of the ring is stamped Tiffany''s do you have any guarantee that the original Tiffany''s stone hasn''t been switched out? will he let your purchase be contingent upon a thumbs up by an indepent appraiser just to make sure the stone is what the certificate says it is?

This ring is only about a 1/4 carat smaller than what I was looking at in the Store. And if you take a superstrong Magnifing glass, at least 20 times, you can see a super smaller lazer etching of the Lucida name on the bottom of the diamond itself. Its crazy how small it is, but its there, so I know its the real deal. Getting some prices on a similar ring that the Jeweler himself can make today. But I''m still leaning on the one from Tiffanys that he has. Gotta go with my guy feeling.
Thanks

Do it, do it do it! UNLESS, and this is a big unless, you think your girlfriend might not want a previously owned ring. Me, I''d drool all over it and lap it up. But that''s me.

There''s a lot of diamonds floating around out there that have been "owned" before. Lots of people also buy antique and vintage rings at estate sales and auctions and wear them. If you like the ring and want the name recognition, then buy it. I''d forget the previously owned part and if it''s what you want, buy it. No one needs to know except for you that it was preowned.

I would! And I almost did too but I changed my mind because I wanted something different. It too came from a great antique estate jewelry store, and I loved it. At that time it was exactly what I was looking for, small size, small stone etc. but I just wanted something different.

The dealers were very good about the whole transaction. We had originally put down a deposit and they very nicely refunded it. I did go "visit" the original at Tiffany''s and couldn''t see a difference. This ring was in excellant condition, and it would have been worth it to buy that one instead.

I''ve been looking into a lot of vintage/antique jewelry stores and I haven''t found too many rings (genuine, signed,) that are from Tiffany''s. The ones that I have found still look great and are significantly less expensive than the "new".

It''s up to you...as long as the jeweler is reputable, will stand by their merchandise I''d do it.

I''d do it! Think of it like buying a new car...as soon as you drive that car off the lot, you couldn''t sell it for the price you paid for it. You''re buying the car a few months later, now are paying closer to a non-inflated price for the car.

Did that make sense???

This ring is hardly a year old, appears to be genuine, from a reputable dealer, and has all the papers to go with it. You''re just not buying it right out of Tiffany''s hands, and that saves you cash on a quality, name branded ring. I''d give the band a polish and go for it!

My engagement ring was pre-owned, it didn''t bother me one bit. I loved it and we were both thrilled to be getting it for such a good price. More money to spend on our honeymoon!!

"Diamonds Are Forever." They are not disposable items. Even if you bought a "new" ring from Tiffany, you have no guarantee that it is not a trade-in for an upgrade.
If you are sure of the ring, I would not hesitate. I am sure many of us are wearing diamonds that once belonged to someone else. Maybe you can get a trade-in on the setting if it bothers you. As long as it did not belong to anyone you know, I can't se any problem in buying it.
