Hello, would like to get your views on the quoted prices for the following gems. Do the prices seem right? Thanks in advance!

1. Silver Spinel (1.8 ct, white/silver/pink flashes) - $1,250 USD <just the gem without setting>

2. Malaia Garnet (2.3 ct, pink/peach) - $1,200 USD

Both seem expensive compared to what I'd pay. Reference YunfanGems on Etsy for the price on the silver spinel. I don't know what vendor to use for Malaya garnet, but unless it's green or orange (unlikely to black out under sunlight) I would hesitate to pay more than $300/ct for any kind of garnet.

Overpriced, especially the garnet! I agree with @voce that $300 is the max I would spend on it. It also has a huge window.

The silver spinel is overpriced. It should be under $500. The garnet is pricy but I don't know the fair price. Is the vendor from Singapore?

Significantly overpriced, especially the spinel. The spinel shouldn't be more than $500, and the garnet is windowed. I would imagine that the garnet might be worth 400-700 because the color is nice and it's a big size, but I wouldn't go for it becuase of the window (personally). The spinel probably closer to 300-500.

Glad to see I was not the only one who thought the prices are on the high side, especially the Spinel.

DK :))

Yes it’s me (who else, the pics are a dead giveaway) and the trade cost for this pink silver spinel to me was much higher than 500. I sell retail in singapore, you’re thinking of trade prices in North America.

Yes garnets are hugely under priced in USA because many people feel they should not pay high price for garnets in particular. Just like fine tourmaline is hugely over priced.

Singapore, other markets like Australia are different. Different markets have different demand, different costs and different design aesthetics.

Prices in this industry vary as do costs. I have bought grey/ silver spinels from 100 per carat to 500 per carat, Malaya garnets at 200 to 500 per carat at trade price and that’s all based on the very very individual merits of a stone. There are stones that are so special that there is no price i wouldn’t pay.

Also, here is an article yvonne wrote why retail pricing is the way it is versus the prices you all may expect which may help explain my point.

To the person who started this thread, for low prices one should go to a semi famous cutter or a wholesaler directly who may offer you great deals even though if not in the trade. The really famous cutters actually charge similar prices as me which are more along the lines of retail.

Sorry. I didn’t think too much about the difference between the retail price and the trade price.

@Rare gem lover you may want to familiarize yourself with PS rules for trade such as:

"Please refrain from commenting on other vendor products unless there is obvious misinformation."

These are extremely pricey.

He didn't have much for spinel but you can ask him. BTW he does show some Malaia garnets but again, ask him to see what he has if you don't see the color you want.

You can report it yourself, consider it an act of humility.

Great now it’s come to name calling and you’re implying I’m arrogant.

I’ll give you this. People are getting the impression that I’m blaming them for being educated about gems. That’s just not true and if it came off like that I’m truly very sorry.

Actually I’m saying psers are very educated but don’t know everything. I’m in the trade and I don’t know everything either!

It’s really very simple. I don’t know everything, you don’t know everything, no one knows everything and should approach everything with humility and I as a vendor will do my best to not be a know it all. I’m not blaming psers for being educated because they educated me.

Eh, I'm pretty close to all knowing to be honest @Rare gem lover.

I found what you said about the Yavorsky stones to be in very bad form as a trade member. I never called you anything, rather I thought maybe you would also recognize your comment was in poor taste and report it. That is all.

Well that’s frankly a misunderstanding. I thought that post was directed at me and the comment before that about the exchange between me and another member about retail prices and wholesale prices. So I actually thought I was supposed to reply. I thought the context was that. So that’s my bad.

I didnt think it was a suggestion to buy the pair by the member to the OP. Later I realised the context may be different and maybe it was an actually recommendation to purchase. I have no issues with anyone recommending anything to purchase in fact that’s the best thing one can do. I fully appreciate the need for sharing options with PS members who are asking.

Folks please everyone stop the name calling or we will have to give time outs. Posts have been removed.
