Like many, I have been a ghost reader on Pricescope for some time. I have seen some truly lovely diamond settings, and great ideas and photos shown around. I recently purchased a(n irradiated, of course) light "fancy" Princess Cut blue diamond that I would like to turn into an engagement ring, but the majority of the settings I have seen have been vintage halo settings. This stone has some lovely sparkle and is of high enough clarity that it can be set without having to worry about having to hide imperfections. I would love an idea that keeps a lot of light flowing through the setting - it has photographed at least three shades darker than it actually is.

So far, I''ve come up with one potential idea -- an unusual "kite" setting with two matching kite-set white diamond shoulders, set on a simple band. PLEASE, tell me what you think of it before it is mounted! Input welcome.

I love my stone, but the only setting I have fallen in love with was from a member whose jeweler created a three stone princess cut with 0.5ct shoulders and some really intricate details -- I remember someone said it seemed like a Tacori look but who was aiming to get a Verragio feel. I cannot find the picture of it anywhere, nor do I know of any jewelers who could custom make a platinum setting for me, should I want to try something entirely on my own.

I love that setting you pictured! It''s unusual and beautiful, just like the gem.

Looks interesting, but those unprotected points will be a source of continual regret

Thank you - I will try to take a daylight close up picture of this ring tomorrow. The stone is actually a light blue, like a subtle aquamarine, with a VS1 clarity ( not enhanced). The photos were taken on my phone!

Good point, I didn''t think of that. Is there a way to kite/diamond set a princess cut and protect the corners?

Yes, you can get a setting that has V-shaped prongs at the corners. It would be just like taking the head of a regular princess setting and rotating it 45 degrees, if that makes any sense.

I like it. Its a twist on traditional princess cut mountings.

Dig it! Just get those corners covered!

To clarify about the corners, your jeweler should just be able to switch the head out for one with V-prongs in a star-set orientation. This looks like it was designed for either a round stone or a princess set the usual way rather than star-set.

This setting really suits the stone well, but I agree that leaving the tips unprotected could end up in disaster, especially if you plan on wearing the ring a lot (which I assume you do). Is there any way you can go custom? An experienced jeweller should have no problem figuring out how to solve this (kind of a) problem.

I would absolutely be willing to go custom on this piece, because I would like the tips protected (exactly the sort of thing I did not think of). I would like to maybe add or change one or two more small things about the piece, and potentially go up in side stone size (I think they are 1/4 total weight, and a little small in size next to the 1.13 carat center stone). I''m worried about the stone looking just a little too large paired with the side stones. All of my desires are easy fixes for a skilled jeweler -- including sizing my ring to a 1/4 size, which my current jeweler refuses to do (not because it is not my size, but because they "only do half and whole sizes." Blah!

Does anyone know of any custom jewelers who are willing to take some time to hash out a design? We have to have the stone mounted by the location where I purchased the blue diamond, because color enhanced stones can be a little temperamental, but I really feel like in order to get the total look I want I may need someone to just put this piece together for me. The trouble is, I don''t know where to even start looking for a jeweler or shop that did custom work.

Any suggestions???

I''m sure others will chime in by suggesting jewellers, but here are some inspiration photos that can hopefully point you in the right direction. These styles can protect the points of square/rectangular stones and still be elegant:

http://www.palasjewelers.com/mm5/graphics/00000001/11672.JPG - could work for your stone with some modifications

http://www.stellarjewelry.com/platinum/p121030.jpg - this one''s quite bulky and even has a bezel, but imagine it with a thinner shank and without a bezel around the stone.

Pretty PC. I like it kite set really well but I am so klutzy sometimes I would worry about damaging the a corner.

I like the setting (with corners protected)! very pretty

I like the setting with corners protected too.
