Hello,

I''m new here but everyone seems to have really good advice so I thought I''d throw my question out there. The jeweler we bought my engagement ring from told us to come back every six months to have the prongs checked and have the ring repolished. I had read somewhere that polishing takes a bit of carat weight off of the diamond. Is there a difference when a jeweler polishes a diamond for cleaning purposes rather than to fix damage? How often should this be done (polishing to clean diamond)?

Thanks in advance for any help

I'm sure he means repolishing the ring metal to remove scratches and dings, not the diamond itself. Diamonds are not routinely repolished.

That's what I thought at first too, but the day we bought it they took it away for polishing and when the woman came back she commented on how the diamond looked so much cleaner. Maybe I just heard her wrong.

No, I'm sure you heard her right. When the check the prongs and polish the metal, they clean the diamond too. It was probably a subtle hint that diamonds perform their best when clean.

Are they polishing the diamond when cleaning it or do they clean it some other way? I'm just concerned that if I go back every 6 months and they're polishing it each time that they'll be taking carat weight off unnecessarily. I'm sure they know what they're doing, I just wanted to check here and get an opinion. Thanks!

The only thing they will do is toss it in their ultrasonic cleaner for 5 minutes.

The only way they could "take off carat weight" is to put the stone on a diamond-coated polishing wheel. Rest assured they are not going to do anything of the sort.

Thank you! That's exactly what I was trying to find out. I appreciate your help!
