I don't post often but I am a frequent lurker. I wanted to share with you my plans for a new ring to mark to significant milestones for me; an anniversary and a birthday.
In my stash of jewellery (made up of gifts, inheritances, and things I bought but don't wear anymore) I found this ring my dad had bought for me in the mid seventies. He had sold land in Europe and was only allowed to bring home so much currency so he was forced to buy "things" for his family. Mine was a ring set in 18 carat gold with a very sparkly, brilliant pink stone in it. I wore the ring as a girl on my middle finger but over the years I just forgot about it.
I showed it to my mom and she remembers my dad spent quite a bit on it. I live a ways away from a trusted appraiser so when I can make the drive I will definitely have it appraised as both my mom and I are curious as to what type of stone it can be??
I think I want to put it in a halo with some side diamonds.
I'd love to hear your ideas and comments so I can eventually make my way to our go-to jeweller guy with as many ideas as possible to have it set.
Thank you in advance for your time.

Do you have any other pictures? Any other details?

You need to get a lap report to find out exactly what it is. An appraiser could give you a best guess, but with out a lap report you will have no idea what stone it is, if it is treated in any way etc. In other words it could be colored glass and no one can tell you that it isn't without a lap report. I would highly recommend finding out via AGL what you have. Especially since it has some a lovely sentimental value to you being from your father.

By 1 picture I really can't tell. A pink sapphire, spinel or tourmaline maybe? If it is hot pink my guess would be tourmaline.

It is best to find out for sure what it is so that the setter knows how much pressure and stress the stone can handle in order to not damage it during the setting process. Knowing if it is treated, what type and the level can be helpful as well since certain types of treatment require different handling. After finding out all the above, you could be advised that certain designs of settings is recommended as more protective or may not be required at all if it is more durable.
