Prong and resizing issues

Hi there,

First time posting. I have some questions for you guys about my engagement ring. I’ve had it for 3 months now and when I received it, I immediately noticed a few things that I hoped with time wouldn’t catch my eye anymore. Please excuse how dirty my ring is, I was just getting ready to clean it. I have a 1.71 VS2 G oval diamond in a four prong 14k white gold setting. I am a size 9, so the ring was resized before I received it.

The first thing I noticed and felt was how bumpy (best way I can describe it) the shank looks and feels to touch. I can see a gold-ish colored line on the inside of the shank. And it also has a hole in it which I think is a pit? Is any of this normal when resizing?

The other thing I noticed was the diamond is slanted in the prongs and the prongs aren’t evenly spaced. The head almost looks a little twisted maybe. When I was getting ready to clean it today, I also noticed that one of the prongs isn’t fully touching the diamond.

I took some photos (probably should have waited until I cleaned it) because it’s just driving me crazy.

Would I be silly to bring any of this up to the jewel

I'm pretty tolerant of things not being super perfect, but your ring would trigger me for sure. Just let them know that after some time of wearing it, the issues are too noticeable and need to be fixed.

I agree with the others that you should raise this with the jeweler.

Although there are four prongs but if one is not sitting properly and the stone isn't level, it is hard to say whether it would put extra pressure on the other prongs over time with wear and eventually compromise them too.

Definitely worth getting it fixed, it not worth the risk of losing your center stone or have it weigh on your mind because you know the issue is there.

Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate it. I’ve been silently going crazy over it. And I have started to worry about the safety of the diamond (like a poster mentioned above) and not just the aesthetics of the ring.

The main reason I didn’t bring it up is because we got the ring through a family friend jeweler and I really didn’t want to offend anyone, and in the beginning I really wasn’t sure if I was just being picky or not.

I’m assuming there’s nothing that can be done about the shank where it was resized??

I also noticed one of the prongs has a slight twist in it. I’m not sure how to describe it correctly. But half way up the side of it, it’s like the metal has been bowed a bit and I can feel it/see it. I’ll try and get a photo of it.

The solder line is normal, though it should be replated with rhodium to cover that. The bumpiness is just a design feature (one that you legitimately don’t like). But the crookedness is poor workmanship, plain and simple. Also, the stone has a thick girdle, and the prongs were not shaped around it. Your stone was set badly in a ring you don’t like. I would advise you to have your diamond reset by a better jeweler in a new ring.

Not to argue or anything, but I saw the ring before it was resized and the shank was not bumpy/wavy. I also have the matching wedding band (not married yet) which has been resized and although its shank isn’t perfect, it looks and feels much better when I run my finger along the bottom of the shank. The bumpiness is definitely not the intended design of the ring.

You might be talking about the sides of the shank where it “bumps” out before the diamonds start? That’s definitely the design of the ring and part of what I love about it.

If you see the photo of me holding the ring upside down, you can see the waves/bumps along the bottom of the shank.

Oh, I didn’t realize that’s what you were talking about. Yes, that is from not cleaning up after soldering. The jeweler did a terrible job on all aspects that a jeweler is supposed to do well.

Ugh. Thank you for your reply. I don’t know how to approach the whole thing. But we are going to talk with the jeweler today.
