Hi everyone... hope this is not a stupid question... how difficult would it be to make the prongs on my ring thinner/smaller? Would the diamond need to be removed???
Thanks
H

Unless they are way too large, I wouldn''t play with them. However, it is easy enough to make heavy prongs thinner or less prominent. Usually the stone can be left in place. In time, heavy prongs wear down anyway.

They are not way too large..just more prominent than i would like them. Why not play with them? Just curious. Thanks for the reply.

Its a matter of degree. You may think they are large. You may be correct or it might be that making them thin enough to suit you will weaken them to the point where the diamond might come loose or fall out. It will take expert advice. You could be completely correct, but I don''t know.

Do you have a photo to post?

I cannot post a pic right now-but I have in the past if you care to take a peek. i am talking about the prongs on my 3 stone princess. Just the centers prongs. If you decide to look lemme know what you think.
thanks!

Hello,

I recently inquired about reducing my V prongs at a local jewelers and was told that they were unable to make them any shorter.

They told me it would not be safe for the diamond to be set that way in a V prong. They did give me an option about having my diamond set in a basket.

I may considering this, however, my husband does not want to hear anything about resetting my ring.

I guess a girl just has to dream

Ha! I basically got a similar reaction from my husband.
Mine are not V prongs..they are the "balls" I guess that is what they are called??? Anyway I''ll probably run it over to my jeweler to see what he says!

the first wax on my ring came back with "balls" and I talked to the jeweler about it and he said in all his years (about 35) he''d never had someone request a particular prong shape LOL however MY designer there *totally* knew what I was talking about and is making tapered prongs. You might have more luck with them tipping the prongs to change the shape a bit if that''s what bothers you...

I just looked at the pic and I wouldn''t make those smaller since they''re holding the corners of princess cuts... BUT if you *add* to them to make them pointier or something, that might give the ring more balance.

Prongs like that are exerting a lot of force on the pointed corners of the princess cut. You must leave them wide enough to spread the load. However, they do look overly tall, high, above the girdle of the diamond. "Maybe" they can be shortened a bit without any risk. Also, they are not shaped to be symmetric with eachother. There are visible differences in the shape of these prong tips. This can be fixed.

okay great. The idea of shaping them to match one another better is a great idea...and may be a large part of what is bothering me. Thank tyou very much for the input!!
