Prongs too big?

Hello! I recently got engaged and the proposal was perfect. After staring at my ring for a few days I started to think the prongs are a bit big and the placement kind of makes the diamond appear more rectangular. I was wondering if it’s just me being too picky? Maybe yellow gold prongs or smaller claw prongs would help the oval shape stand out more? I love the diamond and just don’t want the prongs to distract from its beauty. (I did bring this up with my fiancé and he was understanding and offered for us to talk to the jeweler about it.) Thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated!IMG_1707.jpeg IMG_2013.jpeg

I think you could see if they could make the prongs a bit smaller and more claw like. I don't think I'd go for yellow gold prongs, but I do think petite claw prongs would address your concern. See what the jeweler says about tweaking them.

I might ask a jeweler to shave down the prongs a very tiny bit and try to make them more pointed

A couple of thoughts....
1) many people ask this question- "can the prongs be smaller?
In general- you really want to have strong prongs, right? Also- pictures tend to make prongs look way more obvious than they do in person.
Of course, in this case, the issue is real life, as opposed to pics.
2) the size and shape of prongs has a lot to do with factors that are not easily controlled.
First of all, the jeweler/setter. Not every setter can make claw or even shaped prongs.
That does not necessarily make them a bad" setter. In many cases, the setters who can do shaped or claw prongs cost more.
And then the design of the ring itself. Sometimes changes might be able to be made- but it's by no means guaranteed that you can change these aspects.

I think the diamond definitely appears oval (I do know what you were asking as that’s sometimes a look that happens with rounds in 4 prongs - makes it looks “square” - but this is not the case with your diamond IMO).
However, I do think a skilled bench jeweler could refine the prongs to be more consistent in appearance and a little smaller.
With that said, I would think very carefully about the claw style as they tend to catch on fabrics easier and if they are very fine they just aren’t as reliable with regard to staying secure and you don’t want to subject yourself to that situation given you only have 4 prongs.
They can make secure prongs that are not claws yet are not overpowering.

Maybe you would prefer a six prong head? It tends to make rounded stones look rounder. Plus the bonus is that it is safer -- if one prong is damaged the diamond will still be help firmly in place.

I am a fan of lots of nice strong prongs.
