Hi all!

I saw this shopping channel while surfing to TV, Gemstv. Wondering if anyone has ever purchased anything and what you thought. Some of the items look very nice and I almost want to take a chance.

I haven''t personally bought anything from them, but I actually knew of the show when it aired online in the UK. I found out about it before it came here in the US. Personally, I think the retail prices they put on things are way over inflated, but for what you end up paying...some of those things I am guessing they must have acquired as a bankruptcy type of thing or something for how little they charge.

See what their return policy is on things and take it from there.

Here is a thread from one of PS''s gem experts (with chiming in from people who have bought from there) ranting about the lies all those shows tell...I tend to agree with him!

I won''t get into the discussion of what is and isn''t criminal, but I can recall one channel in general that is no longer on the air for a like practice. They had these way rediculous retail values. For example, they showed a hessonite garnet ring, and said it was 50 or 60 thousand retail. That''s funny. There is no way in hell that the size stone they had in a gold band was going to sell for that. Then they say it''s a great deal for $6000. I sincerely doubted that it would sell for that, and that show began to have a reputation for selling people goods that were over valued for what they would ordinarily retail for.

Needless to say, for some reason...they are no longer on the air.

With Gems TV, I remember seeing a tanzanite ring they had on. I forget the carat weight, but they said it was valued at a retail level to be 80K or so. The setting was decent, and worth a certain amount with ease. However, adjusting for that, there is no way anyone is going to pay in excess of $5,000 a carat for something in the 4-8 carat range. I can''t remember the exact size.

Having said that, they did end up selling that item for under $1000 or something. I just think that their "estimated retail value" is so over inflated, it''s incredible. I think if they put a more realistic price for retail on their items, it would be OK.

My advice, get the bottom line from them before you agree to anything. If you don''t like it, ask what the return policy is. If they say no refunds, I''d be really hesitant.

I have a pair of pad sapphire earrings that I bought on ebay for $30. They were originally from GemsTV and came with all the GemsTV paperwork.

They''re a very pretty colour, and the cut is okay, no windows etc (mind you they are small) but I have no illusions about heating etc. The setting was a bit clunky though. I bought them because I like the colour and were cheap - I wouldn''t have paid more than I did though.

thank you to everyone who has responded so far. I guess I''ll keep watching. I have seen JTV and I agree with what you have said. I think GEMSTV might have better quality. They make everything in house. I called and asked after a post from one of you. If I see something that catches my eye, I may try it. I''ll let you know. the return policy is 30 days no questions asked. Just wanted to say thanks for your input.

Speaking from experience, if you like the stones but not the setting, you''d be AMAZED as to the difference a setting makes for a given stone. You can have a stone that looks OK, but in a given setting, ugh... If you changed the setting, you might be suprised as to how much better those things look.

I hear ya on the heat part. Some people have a thing about that, and I could see why with everything going on now with sapphires. If it''s heated, it''s heated. I don''t have any issues with that so long as someone doesn''t tell me it''s unheated and I know good and well otherwise or it''s heated because they difussion treated it or something. Aside from that, for that price? You can''t go too wrong.

I have purchased from them and found they were difficult to return things to. They charge a 10% restock fee in some cases so beware.
