Hi all,

These pictures have waited a long time to be posted on PS. I've been frustrated with my efforts to photograph my loose stones and it's ages since I posted. Anyway, here it goes.

Stats on sapphire:

Sri Lankan (I hope I remember that correctly)
1,75 carats
7mm round

I bought this from Dana at Mastercutgems and he was his gracious and helpful self. This stone is amazing in all of its color changes. At first I didn't know if I liked the cur or not, but when it was set in Sally's Iolani setting with some modifications and I wore it for a while, I noticed the cut maximizes the shifts and dance of color this one has.

Re: Purple color shift sapphire from Dana in Heart of Water

This sapphire is included, but the chatoyancy and color shift/change makes it glow. It is the first time in a gem when I appreciate less brilliance. When the sun shines straight into the sapphire, it becomes this electrified reddish purple that throws sparks like you wouldn't believe. Because there isn't that much brilliancy, it just looks like an electric socket gone mad with all the blue, red and purple fire. I tried so hard to capture this on camera, but no luck.

This sapphire is like a tv show. Sometimes I wish the crystal were better, but let's face it, then it wouldn't be on my hand, lol. The sapphire is unheated, by the way, can't believe I forgot to mention that.

The ring is made in white and yellow 18k gold. The side stones are faceted moonstones, which gives its own flair, because it echoes the purple.

MT,
Beautiful ring, and I like the idea of using moonstones as side stones. I've missed your posts on PS!!

Re: Purple color shift sapphire from Dana in Heart of Water

Mariedtiger;

You did a lovely job on the design for that sapphire. I too would have never thought of moonstones; so cool...That sapphire rough was from Hilmar Bosch in Natal , South Africa and bought some 15 plus years ago and it was from Madagascar.

You honor the gem by putting it in such a lovely and tasteful mount :appl:

I hope you get at least 50 years of good wearing out of it...

Most Respectfully;

That turned out beautifully! Love the sapphire and the mix of moonstones with a modern somewhat vintage style!

Re: Purple color shift sapphire from Dana in Heart of Water

MT beautiful ring, you always come up with interesting designs. The sapphire's colour is gorgeous, love the shift.

Re: Purple color shift sapphire from Dana in Heart of Water

TL: Thank you, sweet you. It felt good to read your comment :)

Dana: Thank you and also thanks for the details on the origin, I didn't find those in our mails anymore. I appreciate it. I really like how you designed the cut, the faceting pattern brings out all the different flashes of color in dazzling detail, really creative. The sapphire is so magical.

Cushioncutnut: I love your description, that's exactly what I think!

Lovinggems; Thank you :) I completely overdid it on photos, but I love all the different faces of this gem!

Thanks A, likewise! I really think this one was a success. That's why I like going to the same designer many times, the co-creating gets better and better all the time.

+1 - I agree, nice setting for that stone.

Re: Purple color shift sapphire from Dana in Heart of Water

marie, one of the reasons I enjoy your threads so much is that you always have interesting pieces! Anyone looking at my threads can pretty much expect to see a diamond halo  , but not so with yours. I think the setting really suits the sapphire, and the entire piece has lots of personality! Thanks for posting all those photos - a visual treat!

Re: Purple color shift sapphire from Dana in Heart of Water

Thanks colorluvr! Cellentani, thank you for your lovely words. Funny you should say that, I always look forward to your threads as well. You have so many pieces that I admire, and whenever I get the chance I really want to visit the place you buy all those gorgeous settings. The earrings you have shown lately, make me just want to fly over there right now! :)

Re: Purple color shift sapphire from Dana in Heart of Water

Very cool! The yellow gold sets off the amethyst's color sooo well! It's beautiful! :)

mariedtiger,

I LOVE the stone you chose - what a unique way to set it. I truly think you had a vision and I think it was well executed. That textured gold bezel really makes the stone "pop." And what a great idea, adding those moonstones on the side. Great choice :appl: !

Re: Purple color shift sapphire from Dana in Heart of Water

Beautiful MT! I like the moonstones on the sides!

Re: Purple color shift sapphire from Dana in Heart of Water

What a beautiful stone and an absolutely GLORIOUS setting

Re: Purple color shift sapphire from Dana in Heart of Water

Love the hammered finish halo around the bezel and the stone color is just mesmerizing! What a lovely choice for a unique stone.

I just wanted to say how beautiful your ring is. I love that stone! Such pretty colors

Re: Purple color shift sapphire from Dana in Heart of Water

Mariedtiger, I haven't read what everyone else has said so I'm probably repeating things... the color of the stone is beautiful and I love the combination with the moonstones  And the setting itself is lovely.

BTW I just love the ring in your avatar. I read in another thread that it's a mother's ring. It's the most beautiful one that I've seen; it's so original and the detail is impressive.

Re: Purple color shift sapphire from Dana in Heart of Water

Oh, What a simply glorious sapphire!
I LOVE how you display it in that beautiful setting ~
how fascinating to see all the pictures, it's true, there can
NEVER be too many!!!!!!

Re: Purple color shift sapphire from Dana in Heart of Water

MT, such a beautiful stone and the setting is truly unique and custom in presentation. Excellent project, well done :appl: Love the hand shots, looks even better on.

May I ask, when was this made? I have a stone I was thinking of Sally for but that one ring that was shown on PS awhile back that had some problems, that gave me pause, not that Sally wouldn't make it right, but the inconvenience factor of more back and forth through international mail to Thailand.

Your experience was good? Thank you for sharing!

Re: Purple color shift sapphire from Dana in Heart of Water

That is jaw-droppingly beautiful :o

Dana cut a gorgeous stone, and you had it set in a gorgeous ring. Just....wow.
