Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that bad?

Hi everyone , I would appreciate some views. I purchased this stone from litnon after reading a little about gems. I am a complete newbie. ( I usually buy pearls.) I thought the stone is a good deal being cheap and quite sparkly. (The colour isn't something I love but it says steel blue and from the pictures it looks greyish blue like stormy seas.)

The eBay setting vendor had suggested that I check to see if the quality of the stone is something I am happy with. Is it that bad?

Can I trouble you to take a look? I dont mind if you tell me it is a horrible stone, really. I would appreciate if you can tell me why. Here it is:

Thanks!

I am not well versed in CS but could it be the silk he's referring to? Wondering if you are ok with the silky effect under the table?

For my taste, the colour and cut appeals to me and the size. That's the only thing I can think of. I'm sure others far better informed, will pop in and advise you!

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

If you haven't actually received the stone, I would suggest with colored gemstones in particular it is wise as a matter of course to wait until it is in your hands and you see it for yourself - not only is there the potential you may not care for the stone's color and/or performance, but choice of setting / metal usually is best done when you can examine the stone in all your lighting environments.

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

Agree with Mary's comment above. The setting vendor really shouldn't comment on a stone unless it affects the ability for it to be set, i.e. it has surface inclusions that may crack/shatter the stone under the pressure of setting. Get the stone first for your review and ask the setting vendor what 'specifically' he/she is talking about?

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

Thanks everyone! Oh I know what he means now. He was trying to say what Mary suggested.
As this is a limited budget project I'm intending to send the stone directly to be set by LOGR. I'm in Singapore. I'm thinking that for the stone to come to me then travel again to China to be set and then finally the finished ring to travel from China to SG is going to add up.

That is certainly a very wise suggestion from Mary. I am working up to buy a nicer sapphire. When I do, I would have it sent to me so that I can take a look at the quality first and probably have it set here after purchasing the semi mount.

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

Do you like the colour of the stone? I think perhaps LOGR are asking because it's not the most sought after colour for a blue sapphire. People tend to avoid seeing grey in a blue stone because it can make them very cold looking. Others love it but in my experience the "others" are a much small proportion. With coloured stones you should buy a colour that screams "BUY ME" irrespective of whether it's the preferred colour or not!

The other issue with your stone is the haziness you can see. This will be quite apparent and will hinder the stones performance. The haziness is caused by inclusions and it's not something that goes away with a clean! I once bought a stone that had a similar look and it drove me bonkers because I just wanted to clean the haziness out of it!!!!!

If you do decide to go ahead with buying the stone, it might be worth you rethinking about having LOGR setting it for you. The risk is (a) loss in transit and (b) breakage by the setter. If you have a local jeweller it may be worth seeing what they cost to mount a stone. Typically it's not vastly expensive. One other thing ........... if you stone cracks during the setting process it is usually your own liability and won't be covered by the jeweller. That's common practice.

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

I actually had viewed this sapphire at litnon more than once and personally think it is beautiful. I like the sleepy, stormy look of it and like the color too. I think that having it in your own hands is essential to see if you love it. Good luck!

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

Awareness of the colour via description is insufficient. Gems tend to show many "faces" so one should always take time to get to know the stone to decide if it is the right one. In addition, you'll notice that certain metal colours seem better suited to certain stones. You might save some $ on shipping back and forth but you'll lose ALL the money should you see it for the first time after completion and realize the stone isn't right for you.

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

I almost bought this stone as I thought it was a great price for a grey/blue sapphire and I think it will be pretty. But I am trying to only buy stones now that have that "wow" factor for me versus just being a pretty stone. Let us know what you think when you get it. I would view the stone before setting it.

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

I'm a weirdo that likes grey in her stones, and I love it. I think it's beautiful!

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

Thanks everyone! Your comments really helped. I didn't mind the colour of the stone. Not my tdf colour but as mentioned I thought it looked alright and the price was cheap.

LOGRrequested that I do not mail the stone from the vendors to them as there could be custom duties.
I am going to ask around for mounting service. So far the stores that I have checked via telephone do not provide stone mounting service. I will need to custom make a setting with them. So far the custom settings I have heard done are way above my budget. I have approached another eBay vendor call traxnyc. I am hoping he would do it for me. Fingers crossed!

What is your budget? What is it that you are wanting exactly? Could you have it made/put in the USA and then shipped to you?

I hope to have a halo setting for it.
I have made more calls and some googling . Jewellery repair companies could mount it for me! Hooray!

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

When deciding which jewellery store is the right one for you, in general, stay away from mall stores and chain type stores as those do not have an in-house bench or tend to only be familiar with setting diamonds. Do continue to try to find someone local to you as you'll need simple maintenance from time to time, be it prong tightening, replating, resizing and such.

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

For what it's worth, I really like that stone :) But I love a stormy ocean colored montana. The one I picked out for my e-ring is almost exactly that color under certain light. The price is pretty awesome too, so seems like a nice deal to me. :) I got similar comments about my stone from a guy in a jewelry store when I went to go look at settings, but I think with colored stones, so much of whether they are "worth it" or not is how you feel about them. One person likes a little silkiness, another person wants a super clear stone, one person wants super-saturated, another wants something with a lot of sparkle, one person wants "ideal" color, another person likes some grey or green or what have you. In the end I think it's largely how you feel about it, as to whether a stone is "bad" or not. (outside of some really objective things, like cut quality, etc)

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

Thanks everyone. I love all the suggestions I am reading here! I'm looking forward to getting the stone and the setting. Very excited!

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

Hi everyone

An update. The stone looks great! In the end I bought the setting from logr (prongs were a bit small said the jeweller) and got a jeweller to mount it. The finished product looks quite good. I got the stone yesterday and took it out this morning. Unfortunately I noticed three spots on the stone. I am not certain if it is a scratch or because I put it in my ultrasonic cleaner. Oh well!

Pictures in a while.

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

Well now, isn't it about time to share a picture or two? :cheeky: What do you mean by spots? A sapphire is durable enough to handle cleaning in an ultrasonic cleaner.

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

Hi Chrono

I am not sure what the spots are. My aunt is going to lend me a loupe. I am going to try to see what they are

Re: Puzzled by vendor's comments- is this stone really that

I do not know where these spots are in the pictures but guessed at one. Is that what you are referring to?

Are you referring to the picture loading or spot finding? BTW, is that the right spot? Looks like a water spot if it is.
